Ruger #1 in .405 Win

Went to Cabelas today with every intention of coming home with a .45-70, well of course they didnt have what I was looking for, but I spent some time checking out the used gun rack, and found a Ruger #1 in .405 Win. It was an absolute beautiful gun!!! Stainless, grey laminate stock etc. I am not at all familiar with the .405 cartridge, does anyone have any experience with it? How does it compare with the 45-70, other than the usual, "You will find brass, bullets, reloading supplies easier for the 45-70" What makes this cartridge not show up on the radar much?????

thanks Rebel, did you read this one part that made me laugh???

Not many hunters wanted this kind of horsepower, and the vicious recoil of the original '95 with a standard stock that featured considerable drop ending in a crescent buttplate brought tears to many grown men. Oddly, the round was considered too big for North American game unless grizzly bears or moose were in front of the sights. It was a time when there was such a thing as "too much gun."
:D:D Sounds like my kind of gun!!!!!!!!

That's the exact reason..at least its not a cookie cutter cartridge like everyone else owns. Good Luck with it if you decide to buy.

When both are loaded in the Ruger number one there is not much difference in performance. The 45-70 had the edge in bullet weight and availability. You could gain a little velocity with the 405 with its lighter bullets but not much. I believe I recently read that T/C has also chambered the Encore in 405 Winchester. I think Hornady loads their ammo for it as well.

My cousin has an original 95 in 405.

In doing a little checking, I see that Hornady ammo loads a 300 grain load at 2200+ fps. The 45-70 can do this as well but the 405 bullet would have the edge in SD.

My local Scheel's has both a #1 in 405 & 45-70. They are charging a heftier price for the 405, so they are betting that it will be a collector! The barrel is heavier than the 45 70. Ballistic potential for both is there. Wouldn't want to be in the way of either.

so......what is the price? I thought Cabelas was OUTRAGEOUS in their price of $799 for a USED gun. Heck I checked on gunbroker and a guy had the exact gun brand new for $750 and I think gunbroker is high anyway.

The 45 70 runs $650; the 405 $800, last time I checked. They have a 416 Rigby going for 800 as well.

A couple of months ago John Barness did an article on the .405 in Handloader. Out of the Ruger drove a 300 grain bullet at 2300 fps (factory) and a 400 Woodleigh at 2087 fps. This is cape buffalo country. The reason the .405 is the same price as the .416 is they are both Tropical guns where the .45/70 isn't. Craig Bodington and his daughter used a .405 in a #1 with the 300 grain factory loads to kill buffalo in Australia. 2000 lb buffalo were dispatched. With the 400 grain bullet one would have a cartridge with similar ballistics as the .450/400 3 1/4". This cartridge has been used on elephants. The better sectional density of the .405 would help it penetrate better. I'd get both just cause no one can have too many different calibers.

THe .405 Winchester was Teddy Roosevelts caliber of choice. Most guns will be collectors items at some point. I think Hornady is the only ammo mfg offering rounds for it.

I just dont know.....my big hang up is this. I want a big bore gun, its the only gun in my rack I dont have yet. But Im not sure If I want a 45-70 or something like the 405. I mean the true foundation for a .405 is hunting big game, and I dont think a single shot version is the best bet. If I were to ever hunt something really big, I dont think I would want to go with only one shot with having to reload if something is charging. My other hang up is with me being lefthanded, it is very hard to find a gun like a .405, .458 etc in lefthand. So a single shot or lever action is probably my only choices. And we all know your not gonna find a .458 in a lever action. If I bought the .405, other than an African adventure, what would I use it for? Dont think I would use it for 140 lb maryland deer.

Because Mossy is so fun to pick on would be one good reason
I know......I give alot of people he// on here, but I can take it too!!! (except for Bigcountry.....Im gonna whoop that hillbillies butt one day):D
