Lakers???
Anyone here fish for lake trout???? If you do what if your favourite lure???

RE: Lakers???
On Lake Champlain we fish for them in winter through the ice by live bait (smelt , shiner or minnow) under a tipup, or jig them by rod and reel with a swedish pimple or maribou jig tipped with a minnow tail near bottom. In spring they are on top and we troll for them and use any minnow type lure like rebel or rapala. Summer we get them with the aid of a down rigger using flashers and spoons or minnow lures. I like nils master lures in blue or chartreuse.

SuttonSpoons, Flutter Spoons, Hammered copper, Jointed Rapalas in Chartreuse, Or Brn trout, Krokodiles or Needlefish in Brown or Rainbow Trout paterns. Planner Boards and downriggers depending on the depth their holding.

Any of you guys fish for them the old fashioned way? Pulling Copper wire?

RE: Lakers???
I like getting them on top using big flies when the ice goes out. Later int he year a deep diver Rapala is great.

Thru the ice: Williams icefishing spoons, airplane jigs, swedish pimples, bucktail jigs tipped with minnows and minnows on a plain hook.
Open water: Williams wablers for trolling just after ice out and the above lures for jigging in deeper water later in the year. Good Luck |
RE: Lakers???
Charliep there are a few old timers around here that do pull lead lines to get down to the summer fish. Funny thing about it is they always do really well in our big LCI derby held every Father's Day weekend. Most of the lead liners fish the mountain lakes like Caspian, or Willoughby and most of the Champlain fishermen do it with riggers. Great technique but I haven't tried it.

RE: Lakers???
We slaughter them in the fingerlakes (Owasco especially) when we feel like catching a boat load of fish. We troll with flatfish for them here. We use a 2.5 inch phosphorescent green or yellow flatfish. yakima bait company sells them. it's ridiculous how deadly they are for lakers. It's worth looking into online if you've never used them. size = 4x
