Rooster Tails

http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catal...rTarget=browse (i use the 35th color)
incase you didn't know what they were.
i have used them with great success. i have caught my biggest smallmouth ever with one(4lbs), many largemouths, two kinds of sunfish, white and yellow perch, and chain pickerel. i have never seen anyone on tv use them or heard of anyone else using them but they work great for me. has anyone else ever used them? if so how was your suscess?

Wow this post takes me back. Rooster tails have been around for a long time. When I was younger I used the 19 color as one of my favorite lures for bass, pike and even large pan fish. I would go buy 5 or 10 of them at the beginning of the summer and fish them until I lost them all. I fished them with ultra lite spinning tackle and 4 pound test so the pike had a habit of sawing me off. Never tried it for trout but just about every pond or lake fish loved them.

i like using 8 pound line. when i fish for pickerel u use a steel leader about 3 inches long. i lost 3 to pickerel one day and i learned my lesson. since i started ising the leader i've had a lot more luck.

RE: Rooster Tails

yup I know what you are talking about redsox. I always use either a steel leader or the newer nylon leader when I am targeting pickeral or northerns. Unfortunately I catch most of them when I am set up ultra lite for other species.

last year i went out and bought a brand new one and went to teh lake. tied it on without and leader. first cast i say a pickerel grab it and i never got it back. i said some bad words there. i liek using teh 1/8 ounce one but it is a little light for casting so put one of thoes clip weight son it and the thing cast nice. what size do you use, 1/6?

Champlain Islander 02-24-2005 02:44 PM

RE: Rooster Tails

I go with 1/8 oz size and no problem casting with 4 pound test and an ultra lite 6' rod. If it is windy and I need more weight I put a size 7 split shot about 1 foot higher on the line. Helps to use either a snap or a barrel swivel to eliminate line twist.

I usually catch browns that are stocked ,but I throw most of them back.I catch 15-16 inchers regularly.I also use them for rainbows and caught a nice 18 incher in some water that was chocolate milk and nobody caught anything else all day.I am a diehard steelhead fisherman and I rarely get skunked.I didn't get out last fall due to knee surgery and I missed it.I have done that on opening day of deer season as my leg makes it hard to do anything at all.I don't walk very far from a bridge and the guys are just amazed at how I catch them stockers with my 3 1/2 ft. pole and 4 lb test line and my rooster tails.I am know as the spinner guy. Most people use salted minnows and worms but I catch bigger fish with my rooster tails.

I do the same thing! I wonder if it's the same color? I go to like 10 different sporting good stores and by tons of them in case I lose them while fishing! Thats how much I believe in this color! I know I'm nuts! Oh well LOL

mdrbowler99 sorry about you knee surgery. I know what it is like because I have gone through 2 of them (different knees). The 1st was in 77 and was an ACL complements of a sports injury. I did really OK through the years and a couple of years ago I tore a miniscus in the othe knee and had authroscopic surgery on that and it was a piece of cake. came back better than ever after a couple of days. Hope u are doing well now.

RE: Rooster Tails

Dear Jason,
I've had GREAT success with them.I've lost count of how many bass over 5lbs I've caught with them. They only sell small ones here at Walmart so I order 3'8 ounce from Cabelas. I always use white. If bass are schooling I cast a little ahead of the school. I once caught 23 bass in 15 minutes doing that. Every cast was a bass. However; under nornmal conditions I usually cast the lure and count down.Every second is about 1 foot. If I was in a tournament I would let the lure hit the bottom and just retrieve it fast enough to spin the blade.I used to have bass in a large tank. They spend most of the time sitting on the bottom. For best results to fish these you need a high speed open faced reel with no rod stiffer than a medium.Otherwise the blade has a hard time spinning. The only down fault is the small hooks: that's why I use 3/8. I 've caught striped bass, channel catfish to 13 lbs, bluegill ,gar, chain pickeral and crappie with them. They are also hard to fish in weeds where I switch to a white weedless spinnerbait.
Hope I was of help.
Chuck

When fishing small tournaments the other guys get ticked at me for using them . They are that good. They are not easily available here. I've got to order them. I'll be fishing in a tourny on the 19th and I'll be using them in the right situation.{ schooling fish and points}

RE: Rooster Tails

Amen to that.Pickeral will do a serious number on a rooster tail. Better carry extras when fishing for those toothy rascals.
