RE: fly tying
after watchin Chris do it I picked it up quite fast (had been tying for a couple years before I humored it though). One thing, make sure nothing gets 'caught up' while you are spinning! I used 7 hooks on that one and fishing line secured to the hook in front of it starting with the farthes out leg. I spun them all then started trimming LOL. Chris showes you how to put spots where ya want, how to get the 2 toned effect top and bottom..he is a true master! Also I have a fella here named Guy Lee, kinda a unsung master but even more so a master from what I have seen! Like I said before he is doing fish with fins, dragons with wings and he seems to come up with something new every year! Watchin on that vid and seeing guys stuff really made it easy to understand and do. The trimming part...well no way around that one so get a good vacuum close by and be ready to hose yourself off before you go anywhere! best of luck...

RE: fly tying
thanx alot lil huntrer...i will let ya kno how i do...and when one is worthy of swimming i will tell ya wit eats it first....man i hope it is easier then it looks or none will hit the water...i will just make em to stare at! i kno i can only catch a few pan fish on one fly b4 it starts gettin tore up...im sure a bass hittin a deer hair bug on the top will mess it up for good...but i dont think nething can beat catching a nice fish on a fly you worked hard to make...thanx alot

RE: fly tying
are you gluing your heads? ALso twist the bodys to see if they are tight. If they arent your flies will suffer the dread fall apart 'disease'<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>!
On spinning, evertime you finish a 'section' (top and bottom) you glue! Watch Chris and do what he does....also makes sure the tips dont get caught in your thread when you are wrapping..its easier to see after you trim but its HECK to pull out after you have trimmed and it looks like crap! Start with soemthing simple..like the yellow bodied bass 'gurgling syle plugs' with the red collar up front. You are actually spinning the hair around the hook where in the frog I was putting hair where I wanted it (ie grey on the bottom, didnt have white, and the goofy green color on top, then the yellow on top of the green. If you are going to put a spot, like the yellow, make sure you make the spot first either using your bodkin or your fingers. Reason, you dont want to trap hair! Its hard as heck to see the smaller clumps but LOOK HARD before you start trimming as they are easy as heck to find and almost look like sore spots after the finished project is done. If you are trimming and come on a trapped section, trim it immediatly. Chris didnt show this in his vid, just picked that one up. A little prevention is worth a lb of cure. In this case for your show flies when you get there, trying to get them the way you want! If you can, pick up a couple hair flys from a shop and mimick them! Poportions are the hardest thing to learn in fly tying.....learning how to use the equipment is the basics! Once you get that far, you are only limited to what you can conjure up. I will try and get Guys Dragon and Grayling hair flys on my site and post them for ya.....you talk nice LOL! Best of luck! |
RE: fly tying
thanx alot lilhunter...i just finished my first succsessful one that is worthy enought to be trown to a large mouth!! its just a olive body....trimmed flat on the bottom...and rond everywhere else...with black hackle feathers and white hackle feathers and olive marabou in the middle of the tail....just kinda rememberd wut i read from a few diffrent things...and thats how i got it...the fly body needs to be thickend up next time and it will have a nice full body...mines full...but its thin...nothin another bundle or 2 wont fix....neway...thanx alot...o ya...wuts ur site addy? do you have a bunch of fly fishin stuff on there?
mauser06 |
RE: fly tying
as an update lilhunter....i finished my second one....i decided to do the same bug...but with olive and black...kinda look like a frog colors..i figured i would make my bundles thicker to try to get a fuller body...it worked...the fly looks GREAT...i shaped the body almost perfect...but my standards are sorta low...coz im not a pro...nor do i tie them for show...but to fish with..so i think its great...thanx for all the help!!

RE: fly tying
glad I could help...I am no pro either and to heck with tying for show...Dunno what drove me to make that frog...guess I was insane or screw in the brain one nite LOL! Congrats to finishing a couple. To get them thicker (if I understand what you mean by that), pack them tighter, also more smaller clumps is better then more bigger clumps as you can pack it tighter! In Chris's vid he has a scweet little hair packer...its basically a V piece of meatal, on the open it it starts to wrap around and is then cut off. In that cutt of section there is a groove on both sides, this is where your hooks sits. Be sure to do a couple half hitchs and some head cement (do the glue after you pack), and pack that sucker tight! Next get a couple double edge razors for trimmin. A good pair of curved siccors will help also in trouble spots or with trouble hair....my site doesnt have squat for fishn flys, I do have some fish and the rest is hunting/nature pics. I wish I had the desire to put more on there, just dont have much that I like as far as pics are concerned. I guess I can humor the thought and get more fishn stuff on there, I know I have the spot. As for puttin flies ont here the 2 links earlier are MUUUCH better then I could ever do! Also get a bottle of Daves Fleximent. Coat the bottom of your hair flys with it so as to keep them from becoming waterloged as fast. You dont need to soak it in the stuff, just take your bodkin and smear some on the bottom, put it aside to try then go and rip some lips! Post some pics if ya can, if not shoot me an email.....here is my link.

RE: fly tying
how do all the picks i see look like the hair is hard and stiff...mine doesnt look like that...and i found that my first flys bundles were too small...second one were too big...and 3rd one i did with olive white and black...with in between clumps...and stacked it as tite as i possibly could...i got the full look...now where do u glue after each bundle??? where u tie in front of the spun bundle im gessin?...i need to get these things strong...and lookin good...my last one looks pretty good...but im betting when a bass nails it i can kiss it goodbye...i like the site...i would post pics...but i dont have a digital camera or scanner...or id have a site filled with me and animals fish and turtles...and flys worthy of bein shown to the public lol..

RE: fly tying
yuppers, spin a bundle, tie a couple half hitch's in front of it, pack it tight, then glue. take another clump, spin, half hitch, pack, glue. The size of the clumps to spin is about the size of a lead pencil or you pinky finger. Man now think if a pike hits it..all those big ole teeth lol! Thats the main reason I wont throw that frog in the water, my luck some derranged sucker will come up with razor sharp teeth, chomp on it a couple times and spit it out long before I can hook him LOL!

RE: fly tying
lol...thats one thing i fear...bluegills tearing the hair out...i will shot them!!..am i rite by using deer body hair?? in all the pics they look like the hair is har and stiff...the only thing i can think of...is trim it way closer...or cement it how u sed to do to with the bottoms...should i kind put some bettwen the hair on like glaze the hair or sumthin with it?? or are the pics decieving?? lolim gessing they are...but thats ok...they can spend 3 hours on one....when i can do it in about 40 mins and it looks good enough for a fish to take..i hope....thanx alot

RE: fly tying
hmm...the bottom of the fly is for bouyncy (sp) not for durability, although I am sure it will help. I dunno about doing the hole fly though lol. Heck what do you have to loose? Yes body hair is the right hair to use but there is different parts on the body, the belly hair is 2nd best and the most used, the best hair comes off of the backs closer to the flanks! I tell ya, you have to spend a couple bucks and get that video.....it has EVERY thing you would ever want to know on there! The bluegills shouldnt destroy it I wouldnt think, maybe pull a few hairs out here and there...also what kind of thread are you using? Rod wrapping thread works, dont use kevlar as it has a tendancy to cut the hair, if I remember right the stuff I am using is dynabraid? Same stuff Chris has in his vid..its a little harder to find but it works much much better! Packem tight, use the right materials and you will do fine...oh and get that video LOL!
|
RE: fly tying
dynacord not dynabraid sorry!
|
RE: fly tying
ok..thanx...i mite try coating a whole bug with head cement lol....maybe in bettween hairs for durabilty...i will do one thats rough lookin already...just so there is absolutly nothing to loose...i use regular waxed 3/0 tread....so far i can pull it hard enough to cut hair...never broke...and i will look into the video...but i think a book mite be better for me...i would go nuts bein like wut did he say!? but i will take a look at it...
thanx alot mauser06 |
RE: fly tying
LOL! The vid is awesome..better then a book cuz not only does he tell ya, he shows ya (plus ya can rewind and rewind, easier to follow along when he is telling ya and doing at the same time IMO), even how to do the spots and putting them where ya want and getting the effects you want. I didnt like using 3/0, that dyna cord is tops, that or rod wrapping thread, even then I didnt like that compared to the dynacord. Let me know how it turns out with it coated, I wouldnt get to deep inside or you might end up sinkn it lol! That or its going to be a pain to cast.....talk at ya.
