Making Jigs!!!!
I just bought a lead pot to start making my own jigs. I need to buy the molds yet but I was just wanted to know what everyone else uses. Also how is the best way to paint them up and how do you paint the eyes on them. I just started this so any and all info is very well appreciated.
Thanks. Damion

RE: Making Jigs!!!!
I use DO-IT molds
I either Air brush or use powdered paint ( heat head ,dip in powder let cool)
Lead fumes are nasty ,pour out side with a fan ,so you don't dreath the fumes.
Yes water and lead do not mix
I do not paint Eyes on most of the time for jigs for Maume river walleye fishing.
If I do I also use a Q-tip

I dont make my own jigs, but with the painting thing, I'm a firm believer that an unpainted head catches just as many fish as painted.
Also use a quality hook...there is nothing worse than losing a nice fish to a straightened hook.

RE: Making Jigs!!!!
turkeyhunter,
I checked out the sites. Very Good Info! I'm a huge fan of powder paint and Jigs.
I loved the page on making spoons from kitchen spoons. I've made all my own Jigs,Spinner,Buzz Baits for years. I got sick of buying junk. I just purchased some matls from a local fishing expo few weeks ago.
I've been using the powder paint for at least 10yrs. Great for painting Jigs when fishing around rocks or hard bottom. You just can't hurt the stuff. Without a doubt the best thing to happen to do it yourself lure making since the Spinner Bait! I must have 8-10 colors. I can remember when very few tackle shops would carry powder paint. I actually had one guy years ago tell me he was in business to "sell lures"(fishing tackle). Afraid guys would make a their own decent lures and not buy the brand name junk. Now its available almost anywhere around here.

RE: Making Jigs!!!!
I have been making them for over 10 years now. It's fun two.The best way to paint them is to dip them in the paint, then let the paint drip off.Thentake a hair dryer and hold the gig up and go around it with the dryer.THEN HANG THEM ON A DOWL TO DRY.It will take some practice to get the hang of it.For butting on the eyes I use a q-tip.Did the q-tip in the paint, then dot the jig where you want the eye to go and then you should have it. good luck.Any questions give me a shout.
