Carp on the fly

Lately I've been hitting the local river for small mouths and have come across allot of carp feeding. Well a couple weeks ago I decided to go strictly carp fishing. All I can say is WOW! This is a blast! I hooked and landed two the first day. They put my eight weight into the backing almost every time. It takes about 7 to 10 min. to land one, and the initial run seems as though it will never end. They take a brown or olive woolybuger with ease. I’m sure black would work as well and would many other colors and patterns. They’re very spooky and line shy. The take, for the most part is subtle though once while casting to a feeder below, I put the fly down next to the carp and gave three good jerks. He darted after the fly and inhaled it, spun 180 deg and darted across the river 150yds. It was the coolest hook set I’ve yet to see.

The hole I found was holding over 100 carp in a long stretch. Over half the school were stationary and imposable to catch. Many were moving about between the pods of the later up and down. These carp I believe are feeding as I was able to stop many or at least turn them to take or look at my fly. The third characteristic is of course the tailing carp, which is the easiest to catch. Fly placement is very important for this and so is the ability to go into super stealth stalking mode. The take is so light I don’t know if I could fish them without an indicator.

All you fly guys out there have to give this a try! With trout waters in near fatal temperatures this time of year, Carp fishing seems to be the next best thing!

RE: Carp on the fly

While smallie fishin this summer I ran into a bucnh of guys fly fishing for carp. They didn't hook any in front of me. Then a week later on ESPN they were doing the same on the susquehanna river. Seems like that is catching on.

Some things are true whether you believe them or not.
