Best tasting freshwater fish?
What do you all think the best tasting/eating freshwater fish is? I'm sure there are different choices based on your area but for me and mine I think white perch tops my list.

RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
I like crappie the best but perch and walleye are a close second.

Fried catfish, no doubt. Although I'll be sick for days after eating it.

RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
Crappie without a doubt. Followed by bream and catfish
|
RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
I like them all, but would rate perch and/or walleye as #1, with bluegill and crappie next. Of course, channel cat also tastes great. Like I said, I like them all. I guess the best tasting fish is the one I can catch.

My first choice is Walleye Northern and Perch. can,t pick just one of those so whichever I have is fine. Next is Channel cat. Then Rainbow trout. Crappie is my least favorite but I like them too. Never cooked a fish I didn,t like.

Many of you have included perch in your lists. I think white perch is the best tasting but have never tried yellow perch as I was always told growing up that they were a "scum" fish that tasted bad. Is there a significant difference in taste?
The lake I grew up next to was loaded with both but as we ALWAYS threw back our yellows they seemed more plentiful. They were more a nuisance fish for us as we really wanted the whites and/or bass. I remember one afternoon catching over 30 yellows, 12 whites and 5 bass. I threw back 3 eels as well. That was back when I pretty much used earthworms all the time. That was a good day of fishing. Anyone eat freshwater eel? I tried some eel at a fish and chips shop in England that tasted great but have no idea what type of eel it was. Very bright, clean white meat. |
RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
Waleye then bluegill and crappie.
|
RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
Bluegill and Crappie through the ice in winter
|
RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
another for walleyes, perch, and crappies. all are tops for the freshwater in my book.
Cant say much for yellows vs whites....If I ever had both, I never knew it. I think most of what we caught was yellows though and we all loved them. Might have something to do with the lake/river system in which you are fishing, doubtful but maybe. http://www.geocities.com/tradbow007/...dventures.html |

RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
I have had more then my fare share of Pike, although never on a camp fire....they aint bad, but walleyes OK...gasp. To much bicardi with your fish son lol! Dont bother coming up here and waisting your time with the halibut then if eyes are just ok, 230 bucks for an ok fish just aint worth it ! Better yet, lets go, I'll take half your fish lol! Smallies were ok the few times I have ate them, never fished them much growin up. It was eyes, perch and crappies we were after the majority of the time!

RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
walleye is great, carp and buffalo can also be good if fixed and prepared right. But the best for sure is the Paddlefish aka spoonbill found in the major rivers of the us. If you want good tasting firm white meat this is the fish for you.

RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
I'd have to go with perch and walleye!
|
RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
Pike all the way.
Wait, wait, ready PLUG EM!!!!! |
RE: Best tasting freshwater fish?
Around this part of Colorado, it's the Kokanee Salmon, a landlocked version of the Sockeye. Mainehunter, I know what you mean about White Perch, they are danged tasty. I grew up in New England and remember fishing Lake Webb near Weld, ME. Once you get into them you just keep catching them. I think back then (1974) the creel limit on 'em was 100 per day. We caught well over a hundred from the canoe one night! Come to think of it, that week was the first time I was, ummm..."intimate" with a young lady...come to think of it, that might have been one of the best danged weeks of my life!
