RE: lines....
I would say that you don't get cheap on the line. I would say get some Berkley Fireline. It is like 11-14 dollars. It is almost impossible to break, no matter what pound test you get, and it is SUPRISINGLY nice casting. If that is out of the question, Stren Sense A Thin.

RE: lines....
Hey Matt, quit trying to bring people to fly fishing, before you know it, the fly streams will be too crowded and we will have to switch back to spin fishing haha.

RE: lines....

RE: lines....
sorry buck magnet ur a year to late...if it wasnt for matt i woulndt have a decint fly for bluegills but now i can tie my own flys that look pretty decint...and ok ok i will look at the expensiver line...i was lookin for a cheap way out...i learned cheap=dumb my dad made me hunt with remington craplokts this year and i lost 2 deer due to them not performing well...so i am either reloading my own or spending over 20 bux for premium ammo next year...and he uses cheap line too....and his motto is u pay for what u get...but these days dont follow it...o well ive bin a better fisher than him for that last atleast 6 years....now i have a mind of my own and smoke him good..thanx guys

RE: lines....
Use a name brand line. Like Trilene,Stren, Andes,or Silver thread. Premium mono isnt that expensive.Under 10 bucks most places. If you go cheap youll pay later.Believe me its a tough lesson when you have a 12 pound striper hooked on.
|
RE: lines....
them lines are name brands...just like 10 bux for a 1/4 pound spool..thats why i asked if they were any good.... i will stick with my stren easy cast on my light spools and super tough or sumthin of the sort on my heavier spools...i did consider fireline..for about 30secs ...i read the price...25 bux for 300yds...id need about 125bux to string up my main spools...plus other ones i have! thats crazy from what i see...i change my line on my spools i use the most 2wice a year...that gets expensive!!...and when i was lil my dad used to use that shakespear crap taht was like 2 bux....i caught a 36+inch carp on it in heavy current with rocks and brush everywhere on 8lb test...and i was proly 8 or sumwhere round that age...i will spend the money on stren but not fireline!

RE: lines....
I like Berkely, and Spiderwire. Spiderwire is impossible to break!
"Playing under the table and dreaming" |
RE: lines....
ya...spiderwire is good...and i have trilene on one of my spools for a reel...in 8lb and my easy cast in 6lb is better(well how i fish...and the fish i catch)...i caught tons of fish on the 6lb easycast this summer....many well over 6lb bass...and many over 6 lb bass puttin up a crazy fite in one day...and its still perfect...i think thats what i will stick with this year...i love it...and can cast a good 30 yds easyily farther than other 6lb test...its like half the diameter...and i have a trout hole on a lake...u need to cast that extra 30-40yds...no1 else can reach it...thanx guys...

RE: lines....
Mauser, seriously check out the fireline, it may be expensive, but it won't break, it won't get frayed and it lasts atleast two solid, probablly three years. It is great line, pike teeth can't even cut through it.

RE: lines....
i really should bein how serious of a fisher i am...and how much i love it...but im 14 i cant really justify 25 bux of line on each spool for all my reels...if i was in competions and stuff i wouldd buy it...but easycast worked great in every condition last summer...hmmm i love fishin...maybe i can get into some competitions...hmmm..

RE: lines....
Mauser, I was able to buy a 300 yard spool of 20 pound test Fireline at wal-mart for 13 bucks. I spooled up 3 reals with that much. The 20 pound test has 6 pound diameter. I would say that you atleast put it on your favorite/most used rod. It is WELL worth it. I know money is a problem with alot of kids, I am getting out of the phase right now, but it was worth it and I will never use mono for anything except trout now.

RE: lines....
Just a little tip to all you .....cough cough......"Conventional" type fishing guys!!( I was one a LONG LONG time ago.)
Take a hint from us Flyfishermen.....if you don't want to waste a ton of that precious Fireline etc.......then fill half of your spool up with heavy Crap line or some flyline backing........then connect your good expensive line to this with an "Arbor", or "Blood" knot. Do you ever use the bottom half of the line on any given spool??...... All you have to do is retie a new section of good line onto this "Backing" whenever you need to. All the line on the bottom of your spool is , is expensive an space filler. Where one spool of this expensive line might have only filled one or two reels......it can now fill maybe as many as 3-4, to 5..who knows???? |
RE: lines....
Hey Matt/PA
That is a great way to save money and it works 99.99% of the time. I have done that before, BUT when I did that I had my back half being cheap 8 pound test, the front half was 20 pound fireline. I was out fishing for bass, I had a 4 inch jointed Rapala on. BAM, I get a huge hit. I fought the thing for close to 45 minutes. I got it in close enough to see that it was a Muskie, probablly close to 50 inches. Well, as soon as I saw him, he saw me and made a huge run. Well, he got out into the 8 pound crap line. He just kept pulling and pulling until he had all the line out. Snap, my line breaks right at the spool. Now, me being a smart guy dives in the water and swims for the line, but the Muskie was a LITTLE faster than me. I kinda don't trust that theory anymore. I figure that if I had solid fireline he wouldn't have been able to break it, he probablly would have broke my reel. haha. That is just one of my MANY good fishing stories. Hmmm, that gives me an idea on a new topic. Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet "Hunting is not a sport, it is a passion, it is a WAY OF LIFE" ![]() |
RE: lines....
20lb test the diameter of 6?!?!? thats great! my favorite reel is my ultralite and its the one thats is ALWAYS fished everyday(except catfish nites)...if i can find spools under 15 bux i mite buy on...what pound should i put on my ultralite that ses 4-6...since this stuff is so thin...can i put like 17 or 20 on it with no problem??? will this stuff cast as far as my easycast??
thanx...u ALMOST got me hooked...till i see it for under 15 bux(which i think i mite have at walmart too) im not...and if i can put 20lb test on my reel i will pay 20bux for it lol mauser06 |
RE: lines....
You can very easily get the 14 pound fireline. It has a 4 lb diameter, if I am correct. The 20 pound fireline has a 6 pound diameter. If you want something for your ultralight rod, I would say go with the smallest fireline that you can find. I think they make 10 pound test that is 2 pound diameter. I have used the 14 lb test on my ultralight and loved it. I gave up a couple feet in casting distance, but that was all I gave up. I was able to pull lures out from under rocks, heck, I broke hooks before the line would break and that is no joke.
Here is another tip, if you get fireline, put it on the reel, then take your fishing rod outside and cast for awhile. The line is kinda stiff when it is first put on the reel, after awhile, it loosens up and it casts about the same as monofilament. O yeah, it has NO memory too, so you don't have to worry about those pesky curls in the line. Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet "Hunting is not a sport, it is a passion, it is a WAY OF LIFE" ![]() |
RE: lines....
man this stuff sounds great...i dont wanna go down to 10 coz i will take almost a whole 300 yd spool on the reel...i wanna get atleast 2 maybe 3 with the fireline...even if u have to use the backing for one...but my ultralite i cant i come really close to getting out 125 yds of 6 lb easycast now...and i think i mite buy a 12 ft casting rod for a trout lake..theres a hotspot only a few guys kno about...and i can barely reach with my setup now..the other guy(told me where he catches all his fish hes a good friend of my dad) and he has one of them 12ft rods and over cast the hole if he wants lol...so i will look at 14 lb fireline...thanx for the info..

RE: lines....
Your Welcome Mauser, I am sure that you will like the line. It is really good stuff. When I mean that you can't break it, I am serious. If you get a snag that you can't pull out, you better hope the hooks break, if they don't, your reel probablly will hahaha.

RE: lines....
buck...i was at walmart last nite and looked at fireline...it was 13 bux a spool...but thats a 125 yd spool!! id need 3 or 4 still to do a few of my spools for my reels...how about spider line fusion?? its a braided line...is it almost as good as fireline?? it was only like 5 bux a spool of 150yds...if not i will stick with the norm...
