Dog food is a great idea & I also used to put out a few small jugs of homemade stink bait (tied to a string so I could retrieve the buckets) in a large diameter area. Used to chum around double trotline & single trotlines.

Dog food works good for 2 reasons. First the cats, carp, and turtles will just plain eat it. Also the small particles will attract bait fish, which will attract more game fish.

A wise old catfisherman taught me this years ago. Take a 50 lb bag of milo (about 6 or $7) and fill some five gallon buckets about half full. Fill with water to about 2 inches above the milo. Loosely cover and let set in the sun for about a week. Add more water and cover for 2 weeks or more. This stuff will be the god awfullest smelling stuff you ever smelled.
Throw out a coffee can full in your favorite catfish hole. The milo will sink to the bottom and attract fish from a good distance. Ive been baiting up like this for years and it works better than anything else ive tried. Puts the cats into a feeding frenzy.
