we used to do really well on Big Marine and upper red. Heck I would take my float tube out on Lake phalen and Lake Harriet and slam some nice walleyes. Caught some on Harriet that were pushing the 6lb mark. Hung around the last row of sail boats, dunno why they were there but they seemed to be there in numbers and never did I see another trying to catch them from a boat!!! Phalen had fish albeit nothing big. All seemed to fall in the good eatin size. There is a sandbar that is just to the north of the rental build on the west side of the lake. Follow the rock wall north, there is/was a weepin willow on the other side of the lake. That sand bar runs the hole width. There is another point just to the south on the east side and also some rock piles to the north on the east corner (by the big hill cant remember the streets anymore). Crawlers and Leeches seemed to round it out. Big Marine, well we had a honey hole, pulled a 6lb 8oz large mouth from there also fishing for walleyes. There is an island on the biggest part of the lake, just to the south west of that 20-23ft of water. Also straight towards the south west corner there is like a trench. Hard to find on maps, pretty easy to find on depth finders. If the eyes werent there there was some seriously good large mouth fishn, same set up or using jigs. 15-18ft. If ya didnt find them by the island start towards the west side of the lake, find the edge of the weeds usually in about 10-15 ft and either troll with rapala's or drift lindy. The north side has a little secret walleye spot. The farmer I used to work for had a buddy who fished it. Didnt take long to find it as its super small but never fished! Go out the launch till you start to come to point. There is a drop off on the east side, fish the slower drop first on the west side, nothing there go over to the deeper drop, if nothing there try the flat section just ino the second bay going south on the east side.

We used to hammer them on Upper Red before my grandpa passed. Fished with 20ft cane poles, spinners and shiners. Trolled right up to the cat tails, heck even through them sometimes if there was a channel big enough to fish. That was the only place I could catch eyes in 3-5 ft of water all summer long! Never fished Lake of the Woods. From what I hear there is a ton of eyes in there! Used to do really well on Milacs, didnt fish it much but fished it hard when we did!!!

I live here on the south dakota border right next to 2 of the better walleye lakes in the state. Those being Big Stone Lake and Lake Traverse. These two lakes are right up near the top as far as good quality walleye lakes goes if not at the top already.

My favorites are Lake lida and cormorant near moorhead. I will be going to vermilion Quite a bit this summer though, so we'll see witch lake comes out on top.

Hey, i think here in South Dakota it is &quot;Lake Francis Case&quot; on the Misourri River. Which is very good for walleye all year round.

hey Osprey, dont pass up Phalen...depending on where you live its fairly close to ya! I used to live on the west side of phalen a few blocks past the golf course. Used to take my float tube out there. Also hit Lake harriet. Would leave my float tube unflated (not inflated) and ride over to harriet. There was a gas station 5 or 6 blocks away. Go up by those sail boats on the north west side of the lake.....man there are some Hosses in there and no one was ever fishn them!!! Not to mention the muskey I hooked....

Well, I live right next to lake kohlman, witch is connected to gervais witch is conected to spoon witch is conected to keller witch is conected round, and then phalen, so I'm about 5 minutes away, never fished it much though. I've actually never realy serouisly been walleye fishing in the metro area, I'll have to try it this summer though.

not only that but Keller has some AWESOME carp shootin on the south side LOL! We would get in trouble for shooting in the channel but would never get harrased when shooting in Gervais. Right across from the southern most parking lot..couple of big ole trees over there then start lookin. Also the north side was a great place. We would park across from Manards and walk up. Used to work at Manards for a year growin up.....went water skiing on the one off of edgerton..the northern most one with the beach LOL, cant remember the name and I didnt think it was Kohlman..maybe so. Small world eh!

Lilhunter upper red used to be good for walleyes a few years back but the natives netted all the walleye out. Now it's excellent for crappie because the big predators are almost non-existant. I would have to vote for Lake of the Woods. I grew up literally spending my winters on Mille Lacs only coming off the ice to get groceries and more bait but I won't even bother wetting a line anymore in Mille Lacs as the walleyes have been speared and netted out of that lake too. Mille Lacs has noticed a decent comeback from the big perch die-off a few years back and it's possible to take a few jumbo's again but I don't think that lake will ever be back to what it was in the 80's. I sure feel sorry for the resort owners and buisnesses that make a living from that lake.

I hear ya there. I remember my grandpas wedding, I was the 'capt' of one of the boats...man o man did we catch walleyes! We went out and caught enuf for just over 100 people for a fish fry not to mention all the folks that started catch and releasin! Heck we started targeting pike and couldnt keep the eyes off our lines! I will have to pass on the crappie info to the ole man as we still have a cabin on the north side!

I hear ya with the spearing/netting BS! I would agree with it if they did it in there old ways. They dont however as its a money making tool for them and the state has always bent over bacwards for them. I remember the casino in hinckley used to be a car wreck yard. There was TOOOONs of cars out there. We drove by there last fall and its hotel after hotel, you tell me they need to net and poon/spear eyes....its a sore spot in my life....sorry! There is/was a bunch of lakes close to or even IN the metro area that is some real producers of eyes! Dont overlook them..Lake Harriet was one of them, the north west side, I still cant get over that! I left for basic on a thursday, on a tuesday I limited out with 3 of my 6 eyes over the 5lb mark! you should have seen the eyes I turned riding my bike back to edgerton st float tube strapped to the rack on the back with my waders and fins on top and a kickn stringer of eyes hanging on one side of my bike....oh the offers I had that day LOL! Needless to say I left for basic in style as the next day I had a bunch of the family over and fried some eyes...mmmmmm mmmm GOOD! <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>!
