How to make it faster???

Hey everyone, i own a 25hp Mercury tiller on my 16' Lund boat. I am just wondering if anyone knows how to make my motor a little bit faster. I heard that certain kinds of props will make it a little bit faster or by tilting the motro upwards which will reduce hold up might work too. Is that true?? Or do u have any other ideas??
thanx a lot

I know the different props can effect the speed of your boat...not sure about tilting it up and down but I would be the more you tilt, the more forward thrust you are going to loose, kinda makes sense anyways. The one thing about props, man they are exspensive LOL!

hey silver8088 unless that 25hp merk can put your boat on plain dont worry about tilt it will not affect you speed , and the only way to get more or less speed is prop change and thats it ok sea yas

well silver8088 ive seen as mutch as 20 mph on a prop change , but thats on large HP motors ,but on a 25 HP mercury i whould bet about 6 mph faster or slower on a prop change

Definitely have it measured on a Tachometer and try to get it to about 3 to 4 hundred rpm below max with the prop you choose when in it alone and nearly an empty tank. 500 rpm below red line is real good with a safety margin too.

One of the easiest ways to get a little better speed is to try some shims on the top of the transom to raise the motor. Try 1/2" at first, then 3/4", then 1". Keep increasing until in rough water and turning the motor will race a bit from getting some air near the prop. Then go down to the last one you tried just before the one that 'cavitates'. DO THIS! It works real good. Gives you faster hole shots and almost makes it impossible to porpoise with the tilt adjustment. I have done it with small 8 horse motors and up to 50 horses with great results.

Fuel economy is very noticable when it is just right. I've gotten about 10 mph increase in some cases.
