What Test Fishing Line?
I plan on putting a Catfish rod and spinner.
What test fishing line would be better? Like 20 lb, 25 lb, or other? Thank You. jrbsr |
What type of cats you chasing and also what rod/reel setup you looking at. I personally use braid on all my rods. My grouper rods though have mono backing for about 75yards then braid for the rest with about 10-15ft of flouro for my leader.
Specs on rod/reel if you know them. |

Specs on rod/reel if you know them. A 6 ft med heavy rod, and a med spinner. Mostly pond catfish. |
Good rod rated to 20 or so pounds tied with 20lb line will work fine then. Its more in the drag then anything else. Have landed big fish on light line, the only reason for success was letting the rod and drag wear the fish down so he wouldnt break the line with a quick headshake.

Depends on structure Johnny...
I'm a 10 pound test guy in normal water conditions.. I only usev20-40 pound braid in pads, trees and hydrilla |
I went ahead and got some red Cajun Line 17 lb monofilament.
I just wanted something stronger than 10 lb line. I think this will work fine for what I want. Thank You for the replies. |
Ok Johnny....10 will get you more bites...and I've boated cats up to around 20 pounds on 10 pound test in open water..I like the sportiness of less poundage and you will get more bites.

All good, if it is muddy water the fish won't care all that much what size the line is. It's not as delicate as bass or trout fishing. I tend to be safe if targeting cats due to us having blues and other big ones up here in the rivers. Ponds and lakes don't mess with all that much prefer salt water but head up the river every once in a while.

True...and cats do have very coarse sandpaper like teeth which can cause line breaks. I never used Cajan line before.

I use 40 pound test on my catfish rod... but the reason for that is because my catfishin hole is full of alligator gar.
