Anyone Catching Crappie?
#2
Don't fish for them hardly . Fishing is slow right now...If I wanted some I'd go to a certain phosphate pit...work the shoreline with a lipped hook minnow just off the bottom...and I could catch a ton...I've been working hard on my weight and the way I cook them is very fattning. I've been cooking lots of bass fillets though.Since I've retired..I'm no longer a catch and release..I've released over 1000 bass in my life time..Now it's time to fry a few up...Incatch them on artificiall....Minnows for crappie are 5,00 plus the spot is a good little clip down the road....just like bass fishing a whole lot better...Bass are off in my neck of the woods though or I'd post a pic....Struck out today.

Here is a healthy way.
Take a bread pan put a layer of aluminum foil then lightly spray with canola cooking oil, then the filets.
A few drops of lemon, and a few drops of lime, then a sprinkle salt, and pepper then lightly spray canola cooking oil.
Leave the aluminum foil open.
Bake at 350 for about 15 minutes.
It is finger licking good.

Any other fish..maybe but for me..not crappie. They are a very mushy flesh fish. I soak them in buttermilk to firm up their flesh...
Then i flour them in my special seasoned flour
Dredge in egg
And dredge in Panko crumbs
Fry in peanut oil....(-; turn out great...but fat gram city

Been catching them on a consistent basis through the ice here in Mid-Michigan. Will most likely pick up a few today if my schools of fish have not moved. Crappie are suspending fish and are very active in the water column. I catch them on very small tear drops tipped with spikes in the winter. But, in the spring and summer you cannot beat throwing a small jig tipped with a minnow.
I agree with C7 though, Crappie is one of the most mushy fish around and I am C&R with them. Specially when Bluegill/Bream are plentiful and fillet up much more firm and flavorful.
