Just curious but doesn't anyone fish for trout? I'm one of those guys that would take an 8 inch trout from a free flowing mountain stream over the biggest bass that has ever been spawned.

you talking Brookies? I've got a nice spot for em. I wouldn't ever keep one that was eight inches though. I only ever harvest older Brookies, I kniw the smaller once taste much better but the fact is they don't get stocked every year and you can't go taking all of them. I keep tops one or two Brooke trout a year. Not to say eating the eight in her is nessecarly wrong because it isn't but if its less than 12 inches or so it has lots of spawning left in it. IMO we should do everything to maintain that wonderful resource and beautiful fish.
Rainbows and browns in your bigger stocked rivers like the yough or Potomac are my bread and butter, I haven't started fishing yet but I typically catch limit and keep them all. I don't have to feel bad about doing that to stocked fish three times a week. I eat a lot of trout during these coming months.
I feel the reason people fish for bass mostly is because it takes finesse IMO that is not the case with trout because I use crawdads for bait with trout making it very easy to pull in limit.
I think it's the fight a nice keeper bass puts up, I usually use a jitterbug on top feed days.
my favorite fish to go after is bluegill, I paddle the Jon boat out deep and drop a worm to the bottom. Most if not all bluegill I catch this way are 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 inches this season I'm hoping got eleven inches which is troph citation size for bluegill in maryland. You should see our state record bluegill taken out of deep creek lake. It's a total pig. 5 pounds if I remember correctly.

Not 2014 - not mine

Just wanted to show everyone the maryland state record bluegill I mentioned in the last post, hope nobody minds. It was truly a monster though.

Best part is the young girl got to catch it, she went to my school but is older than me. It was early nineties. Caught in deep creek lake.

Not just brookies but also browns, rainbows, cutthroats, lakers, golden etc... Maybe it is because I grew up in CO, but for me trout is where it is at and I've caught some good ones.

My biggest brookie was 19 inches long and weighed just over 3 lbs. My biggest lake trout is 29 lbs. My biggest brown is 9 lbs 10 oz. My biggest rainbow is about 8 lbs. I've caught a lot of cutts over 6 lbs with maybe 2 or 3 that would top 8. Never caught a big golden (and I'm talking about the actual golden trout from the west coast and not those fake yellow rainbows in the east) but they are the prettiest of all trout. A friend of mine caught a 16 lb splake once and that was a really cool fish and we catch a lot of rainbow/cutthroat hybrids up to 5 or 6 lbs.

I don't use bait for trout. I use either spinners, jigs or flies and I don't fish anyplace for trout that depends on stocking. Where I fish is all natural spawning. Give me wild trout in a clear mountain stream any day of the week.

yeah, our fishing is much more limited than that, anything here that holds brookies wont hold anything else. typically very small mountain runs. i would love to pull out a 19 incher lol!!

colorado sounds like the mecca, cutthroats and all that, you should take me on an elk hunt lol

yeah all of our "golden" trout are stocked and people talk about them like theyre this super rare awesome fish when in all honesty its because they dont stock that many. however most that ive seen are big so they must only release bigger holdovers. we have native browns everywhere though. you should try live crawdads i swear to you its literally a magnet, you know those deep pools? drop him in the bottom and he'll crawl all over the rocks. fishing with lures is more fun but the crawdads are deadly productive if you wanna fill the freezer.

Most the areas I fish for trout are designated flies and lures only so bait is a no go.

As to elk hunting, that may be doable. I want a sika deer. Maybe we can work a trade.

jrbsr 03-24-2014 04:08 PM

I found an old picture of a 5 lb Bass I caught when I was 28 Years Old.

Now when it stays warm, I will catch some more biggins.
I caught it in a pond beside an old water heater someone tossed in the pond.
I caught it with a light brown Rebel Frog.
I caught it with my first baitcast reel, a Shimano Bantam B-100 Mag.

First largemouth of the season
17 inches 2lbs 11oz
My biggest one to date
awhile back md started a closed season for bass
Doesn't open until June 15th
So I think this may be the result of some good management
Most I catch here in west md are 12 inches 1lb, which oddly enough is the minimum size for keeping.
This fish was happily released in perfect condition.

westMDbowhunter 05-10-2014 12:03 PM

the dvd cases in the car were all i had for scale, i took him home and measured him. (22 3/4) also close to three pounds.

who else loves fishing for bullheads?

nice stringer of bluegill and pumpkinseed. largest gill pictured is 9 1/2 inches and 12oz. wish i could hook into one over a pound.

Wanted to add... In MD citation size pickerel is 24" but in WV it is only 20"
What would you consider a real trophy pickerel? The one pictured is my largest yet, already breaking a few personal records this spring!
World record is 9lbs 6oz on chains

westMDbowhunter 05-22-2014 04:36 PM

Because I really like fishing for bullheads ;)
15.5 inches and 2.4lbs
My biggest bullhead yet.
Our state record is like 3lbs 4oz

Brown Trout. 26 inches long. 7 1/2 lbs. Taken in CO on a 00 silver MEPPS spinner attached to 2 lb line on an ultra-light spinning rod.

That probably a record in the 2lb line class for igfa not sure haven't checked but on 2lbs!!? That's monsterous
What kind of knot did you have on that spinner?
Must have been a hell of a fight. Really would have had to play him in.
Congrats man

Maybe. Not sure. He took the spinner down deep and was bleeding when I got it in. Since it is filleted and in the freezer it's a moot point anyways.

I use a Palomar know for everything. Easy to tie and very strong.

Took about 20 mins. A smooth drag is the answer to bigger fish on light line. As long as the drag is set below the breaking strength of the line a fish can't break off unless it wraps up on something. Patience is the key. Besides I was alone so I didn't have anyone yelling to distract me either. That helps.

Congrats man

Thanks. It was a good brown. Not my biggest but still a really good fish taken from one of my favorite places. Some of my Father's ashes are in that lake so I like to think he helped with this trout.

westMDbowhunter 11-30-2014 10:09 AM

that's awesome flags. i know i always post late lol i dont have steady internet.
just get some wifi when i can.
yeah man, its more about the personal conquest and achievements anyways.
like my bullhead i posted, i worked hard for him. i was "trolling" worms, which may not seem hard but i have a 9 ft jonboat with no motor. i use a long wooden oar to "troll" (more like drag bait) my go to lake is about a mile from home (lucky me) alot of people stare when i paddle out but i normally out-fish most of the bank hugging trackers.

palomar- all i use now but i didnt know about it last year which cost me a five pound rainbow. got him (probably her because it was a breeder trout which get stocked sometimes) i had light line (4lb) and it just simply slid the hook out of the knot.
i wish they wouldnt stock rainbows here..... you would think they would compete with native fish for food all summer and fall. its probably stunting brookie and brown populations here... but im no biologist.

you still get to go fishing with dad :) that's beautiful man.
i told my gf to float me down the Potomac, which is very powerful up here near its mouth. when i first saw the river further down state it was weird... so flat on that side of maryland. nice place to visit though.

wonder if we'll see any snowfish on here? lol
