Got SNAKEHEADS??
The invasive Northern Snakehead has been a fun fish to target...here is a look at a good one i got last month out of the Potomac river.

Nice job with documenting the fish which is one most of us haven't seen and hopefully never will get into our water. I understand in places where they have appeared Fish and Wildlife tries to poison them and stop the advance of this invasive species. Thanks for posting and sharing your experience. Cool fish to be sure.

Thanks...MD dnr has made it illegal to release back into the waters alive. Im not sure it will matter at this point...but i try and do my part. Very popluar with the bowhunters as they perfer very shallow water next to shore.

Just saw where a guy in a creek off the Potomac caught a new world record snakehead 17 pounds 6 oz. It also said something about the MD DNR giving prises for killing them. I guess they can live out of water and cross land to get to a better body of water and are impossible to get rid of. I think they eat them in the home countries. Looks a lot like our bowfin here up north.

Yup like a bowfin. I dont think they are giving anything out anymore...there are a number of tournaments aimed at number reduction...but i dont think they are going anywhere.

Haven't seen a wild Snakehead in AL yet, but have caught several Bowfin(AKA Grinnel) locally. Last one I caught was 3-4# and absolutely destroyed a spinner bait! I am familiar with the fish-I spent 4 years in SEA during VietNam and GIs called it the "walking catfish" because during monsoon flooding it was routinely seen flipping across roads and paths from one ditch to the other. I was introducing my sister-in-law to Thai cooking about 6 years ago in Birmingham, Al and was very surprised to see a tank with a number of live snakeheads for sale! The Thais called them Pla-Duke, and so did the store owner.

a better questions is where did you get that big brownie in your pic....a very fine fish.

You ought to try and fry one up. The meat is not that bad.
