1996 28 h.p. Evenrude question

I just bought a 14ft side counsel with a 28 h.p. evenrude, I ran the motor for about 5 seconds when I got it home and now I notice what looks like oil dripping out of the exhaust. Is this something to be concerned about?

Is it a 2 cycle or 4 cycle? ...it could foul your plugs..sounds like it needs rings but i'm no expert...

BOYWONDER 06-02-2013 04:26 AM

It's a 2 stroke

Phil from Maine 06-02-2013 04:52 AM

That would be normal for a 2 stroke engine to have..

Yes sir..and while sitting in church this morning..i thought ..i was wrong..that would be a valve issue..if it was a ring issue..it would be smoking...

Being a 2 cycle ..it can happen as Phil said.

Found a little hole just below the top drain screw for the lower unit. What's that for?

Not sure...i stop using an out board after my 3rd visit to the repair shop..i said just keep it and have not looked back since..i do all my fishing with an electric motor...

if I remember correctly the 20-35 hp motors had a vent (small hole) in the lower unit:confused:

A vent hole for what?

Phil from Maine 06-03-2013 02:50 AM

It would be for a cooling water vent. These are located in a couple of places on the motor. You can actually see the top one venting when the motor is running.. On the bigger motors when hooked up to a garden hose you can see 3 to 4 different water vents. They are made that way to help keep your motor cooled off.

I also fogot to mention... Do Not Run IT Out Of The Water unless you have a garden house hooked up to it. Even for just a short time can cause it to over heat and also mess up your impella. The impella runs off your water pump to push the water threw..
