Lil',
Believe it or not.....that's about the ONLY flyrod company I have absolutely NO experience with......they could make swizel sticks for all I know!

You must have some $$$ if you plan on picking up a "Few" Loomis GLX's!! Not exactly a low end rod my friend!
I have a 9' #5 GLX that is my main large stream trout rod, with a LOOP 1.5 Traditional reel.......great set-up.

What length, weight , action (fast, med-fast,med etc.)rods are you looking to purchase?.....as well as budget?
I pretty much can tell you what's what with the different manufacturers if you need help deciding.....I've cast or fished A LOT OF EM'!!!!
Let me know.

By the way....if you are referring to that Madison River pic on the other post.....it was already in another catalog. The 1996 Orvis.
I wish I had saved a few more for keepsakes.

well being I am possibly getting into the buiz I might as well 'treat' myself LOL! I was figuring 2 or 3 rods for now as my gl4 7 handles most situations quite nice and my sage 3wt is great for the grayling and small trout! Dont have a ton of money right now though (probably wont for a looooong time either HA)!

Here is gatti's link.
http://www.gatti-usa.com/
I sent for a brochure. I like the med fast rods...the gl4 is about perfect. anything over 10ft felt odd, I tried a glx or gl4, cant remember, 10ft 6wt and had a heckuva time with it. Dunno what my brain was doing but my hands were all thumbs ! As for reels, I am pretty well set (sytem 2L's on my trout rods and smaller salmon rods, system 2's and a couple g-3's on the true big game rods). I can get stuff at pretty good prices (below catalogs) from the fella I tie for. Not really sure but he is talking me out of the guiding end, and into something else and is wanting a resume pronto....figured it still has something to do with hunting and fly fishing so why play with my ole im6 rods LOL! I do have a 1wt, cant remember what the blank was. It has his name written on it instead of the manufactorer. Man you talk scweet on a 16-18" grayling!!! We traded a rod for some flies....beleive me it was worth it lol...he supplied materials, I ended up with that 1 wt, a system 2L 5/6 and a 2 wt line. I had to tie 125dz flies materials provided....!

as for sage, well I just havent gotten much for kicks out of them other then my 3wt light line series rod. I fell in love with it the first time I touched that rod. So has everyone else who casts it!

If you are breaking into the biz you should do yourself (and your customers) a favor and look at the Temple Forks rods. I am a custom builder that heard all the buzz about these rods and did some research on the. Went to a trade show in Danbury Ct. and played with them for better part of a day and left the show a dealer with a 50 rod inventory. They absolutely impressed the hades out of me. We showed them at a few shows recently and sales were excellent. Call TFO at 1-800-638-9052 You will not be disappointed

not starting a shop but have been asked to guide both hunting and fishing. As for the temple fork rods I have heard great things about them also but the one thing I keep hearing is they are the equivalent of a gl2 or gl3 rod..what ya think? I like my gl4 quite a bit more then a fellas gl2 I casted last summer. Hence the reason to go to Gattis or buy another 2 or 3 gl4's possible a glx (man if I only had more mula )!!!

What size/weight rod are you in the market for. They have several models ranging from
$79.95 (this is the low end IM6 2 pc rods) up to the $259.95 IM8 super fast cannons. They make a 906-4pc western series rod built with wind and big water in mind that has been a very popular rods out here. The salt water series with rods in 8,9,10 and 12 are by far the best deal that they offer. Real nice rods for $149.95. I am not a big fan of the Loomis rods and even less now that they are owned by Shimano so I really cannot give you an apples to apples. I am a big fan of the Winston rods, I feel that they are the benchmark rod maker. But the price of the bench is far from the reach of most. I tried to go head to head with the BL5 in a rod that I put out called the Travel Mates, what this rod amounts to is 4 rods in 1 tube. It is a 9' 3 piece rod that comes with a spare mid and tip section. You can change the mid and tip and the rod jumps 2 TRUE line weights. You can also mix and match the sections any way you like to get up to 4 different rods actions. My 7/9 is by far the most popular and it will nicely throw a 6 thru a 10 line, with the 7 mid and the 9 tip you have an excellent sinking line rod by kicking your flex back down the rod allowing the rod to do more of the work. Its been a tough nut, I get ? like "how did you come up with this and not one of the big boys" Tough sell but its catching on. When I hit the salt I haul this rod with a CA Harris Solitude 4 reel and 4 spare spools and I am good for the trip. For the trout I haul the 5/7 again with the Harris and 3 spare spools and again I need look no further.

what type of blanks is tfo's top of the line end? I have way to many im6 rods right now LOL...not that theres a thing wrong with them but sometime in the near future I am going to jump up to a better rod. Btw what rod blank is my sage LL series 3wt and my gl4? I have heard good things about the tfo rods espically for a more entry level side but have yet to get my hands on one to cast. I would like to, same thing with a gatti rod, before I purchase anything! Maybe I'll have to call the company LOL!

The top end TFO rods are constructed on the IM8 series graphite. Really fast and powerful, but IMO they take some of the fun out of the fight. I dont want to break the fishes neck just have some fun. I prefer the IM6 and even the IMX for my nymph rods for trout, real slow and mushy. As for the Sage and Loomis rods they keep the customer in the dark with BS designations like GLX or GL3, nobody knows what it means but the Mfgr. Why not stick with the industry and call it what it is. Sage does list many of thier models as the IM6 Graphite II. Now we are seeing rods on the market in IM8 (54 mill. modulus) and 2 other strains touting 64 and 83 million modulus in the construction. Keep in mind that the higher modulus does not necessarily mean a faster higher performance rod. The higher mods just allow the designer to lighten the blank by using less material. The taper and layup detirmine how the rods perform. You really should get your hands on a TFO and put it through the paces. I think you will find that all those 300 - 600 dollar rods are primarily smoke and mirrors. Why pay for a name.

cuz I am looking at gatti's for less then or right at 200 bucks LOL (just received there special email back)! Hence why I asked.....also just what is a gl4 blank. My partner has a couple glx's and I liked them as much as my gl4 so I was thinking more gl4's and save a few bucks. I dont have any gl3's. Also have more then a few im6 blanks and they leave something to be desired on 40lb kings and 15lb silvers with my ligheter rod. Just cant see buying a stiffer heavier rod to stay with an im6 blank.

Maybe you can send one of those TFO rods up here for some serious testing on 'big game' hehe..fishing season is right around the corner, a good 9ft 6 wt would be nice to handle some of those 5+lb bows, bigger once summer comes around and I can get to traveling more. Not to mention some char that would make ya drewl!
