Ready for my first Bass Tourney
I'm getting my game plan all ready and my gear rigged up for a good bass tourney with some good people. It's gonna be friendly of course, but I'm trying to bring my serious A-game tomorrow morning. Overall I'm looking forward to it, just have to calm the excitement nerves down a bit haha

Chuck7 06-22-2012 12:19 PM

Hope we don't get rained out...

flhunter91 06-22-2012 01:08 PM

Yeah I was hoping the same thing.

Whether fishing a serious tournament or a friendly-match, I would suggest not getting nervous or worked up over the situation. You wouldn't not believe how rough that can make for a day of fishing. Little things like nerves and excitement can cause you to fish differently and become much less effective.

Good luck!

Amen to that Buck...fact..I wish you would be there...(-:

Chuck7 06-22-2012 02:42 PM

Hey Zack,

Try and take pictures of your 2 best fish so that I can post them on here...if they are on your phone..send them to my phone..I can transfer them..

It's not necessary..but would be nice.
Keep safe..the gators are might see your kayak as a big snack...How many rods can you put in your kayak?

I will text tomorrow at 5

flhunter91 06-22-2012 03:18 PM

Hey Chuck,

My phone has internet so ill be able to post my fish if I get them haha. If the gators get close I just move away. I'll be safe though. I have a basket in the back of the kayak and I am carrying 4 rods tomorrow with the lures I'm gonna try to use tomorrow. Hopefully the rain holds off tomorrow morning. Lookin forward to hearing you in the morning.

Wow! That was exciting...After I boated my first fish I was shaking like a leaf.

Not sure how the other guys play by play went..but the word is out..KVD' sexy frog is HOT but I need to learn how to set the hook..I had a huge one get off and 2 more within 15 minutes of getting on the lake..very I went with what works for me..the black worm..I boated 6 2 best weighing only 4 3/4 pounds.. Zack was right behind me at 31/2 pounds..he lost a big one and I lost 2 big ones..My son Matt had a hard time getting them to cooperate..he got skunked..

That was fun...and will have a redo next Sat.

Here's my first fish 2.25 pounds.
I also got a gar about 24 inches long..took a while to unhook the thing/

flhunter91 06-23-2012 07:53 AM

Had a great time today as well. It was a slow start but it picked up steadily after awhile. Hey Chuck, how long were you working that frog until you switched up. I tried a popper for about 15 minutes and just stopped haha.

Phil from Maine 06-23-2012 08:02 AM

I am glad you guys all had some fun down there fishing. Sorry to hear you guys lost the big ones but, then a agin don't the big ones always get away.. LOL Well in most cases anyways.

I tried a popper for about 15 minutes and just stopped haha.
Poppers normally work good here for smallmouths. I have never tried them on largemouths though. I am thinking about tying up a hairwing mouse out of deer hair. The hair keeps them pretty well weedless and the action of just popping along should prove pretty good. They almost always work good for a top water lure. The flyrod is something I know how to Thanks for the idea on top water lures.

Chuck7 06-23-2012 08:06 AM

I went back to the pit on the right..Right where I had caught my 10 pounder I cast ....paused.and my frog exploded..I waited a half second..too late CRAP!! nice boil..I recast it there..BAM!! She hit again...missed again..

Went up to the next group of cat tails...BAM!! miss..ok ok ok..I quit..get out the rubber worm. I knew the bite would be slow so I got a little off the shoreline..went to some promicing spots and patiently banged the shoreline. Overall got 15 hits..6 in the boat..not perfect but good enough.{ -; See ya next Sat. God willing..WIth the full moon coming we should see heavier stringers..

Thanks Phil...just saw your post

Chuck7 06-23-2012 08:11 AM

Yes sir..they picked up around 9:00..patience was the ticket today..Matt was trying for the big fish in the wasn't there today..Instead..a lot of pitching or casting..

flhunter91 06-23-2012 08:35 AM

Yeah I'm looking forward to some bigger numbers next weekend. Maybe sneak up on you again haha. Overall a good day of fishing.

Chuck7 06-23-2012 08:53 AM

You did better than I thought you would fishing from a kayak..did you have a net? I would have lost one of my. Weigh ins if not for the net...she came unbottoned while netting her

flhunter91 06-23-2012 09:00 AM

Yeah the kayak worked better than I expected Chuck. I did have a nice size net with me which definitely helped out a lot. I was proud of myself today as well haha.

Chuck7 06-23-2012 09:10 AM

Sounds great. I'll be making some adjustments myself preparing for next for sure...working on the frog hook set..I pulled it up on YouTube last night..and sure enough,..everyone has a different style...plan to get it down this week..the frog no doubt gets bigger fish...that is no secret..just fact.Thinking about going back to Horny Toad....much easier to set the hook.

flhunter91 06-23-2012 11:06 AM

Yeah I want to adjust a bit. Since I don't have the money to get a medium heavy baitcaster I'm gonna just put a stronger line on the worm rod. Maybe a lightweight braid for the trees. Maybe I could horse them out more without breaking off. I also want to get a frog as well since I lost mine haha. I just have to find them somewhere now.

Chuck7 06-23-2012 11:14 AM

Yes sir..that is both of my adjustments as well...a braid rod and master the frog hook set...there is always a flipping bass available...and always a frog bite in the morning.

flhunter91 06-23-2012 11:38 AM

Sounds like a good plan. Hopefully the new adjustments bring in more and bigger fish.

j76 06-24-2012 05:25 AM

Not sure about the type of frog you guys are using, but i've used a strike king grass frog for years (don't think they even make em anymore). It's made from a soft rubbery foam and when hit they seem to hang on to it for a few seconds anyways. When a strike occurs, a nice steady few cranks of the reel and either the frog starts coming towards ya due to a miss or the line comes tight and he's there for the hook set. Easier said than done tho, hard to not just rip back on it when that water explodes all around the bait! But thats the fun of topwater!

Chuck7 06-24-2012 09:19 AM

Appreciate the reply partner..I studied videos of folks hooking into them last night and also listened to KVD himself...and here's what I observed and will try Tues.

These particular frog is not like the Horny Toad which I will explain in the next paragraph...the KVD frog is very soft..when the bass bites down I believe he feels the 2 5/0 hooks and spits it out.I've had about 8 bass explode on it now and none of them took it..therefore (and what I gathered from successful froggers) one needs to set the hook like a jig ...soon as. She explodes..pop her,,which totally goes against my style of hook setting..I discovered this lure last week as I had caught 3 bass,,the older man had caught 15..and nothing under 3 pounds,,,I'm now all ears(-:...his lure..a KVD Sexy Frog..and he told me as soon as she explodes pop her...I ran into another man yesterday...said the same thing..and watching the videoed I saw the same thing from 90 percent of them...the only lure I fish like this is a jig...if I feel anything I pop her good

Now..I an successful with the Horny Toad and that hook is well hidden..the bass will boil and in most cases like a rubber worm swim off with it..then I feel the fish and let the rod blank drive the hook home for me using a pull set..

I'll let you all know Tues, When I experiment like this..I will leave ALL other lure home.Another adjustment...switching from 10 pound mono to 20 pound braid..and a stiffer rod.

flhunter91 06-24-2012 01:31 PM

I hope you figure it out Chuck. Lots of nice fish waiting to be caught haha

Chuck7 06-24-2012 02:20 PM

I got a 6 foot mh rod only if you want it...very good shape..lightning rod..caught many bass on it..

flhunter91 06-24-2012 02:57 PM

I wouldn't mind borrowing that rod Chuck for the tournament. Get a better hook set on the fish. If you wouldn't mind that would be very gracious of you to let me borrow it for the tourney. Thanks

Chuck7 06-24-2012 04:17 PM

It's may pick it up at my home..or I can give it to you the morning of the tourney..

I'm on South Crystal lake drive..I can see Southeastern University from my house..I can pm you the house number if you want.

Won't be home tomorrow...I'm meeting a relative at the Disney resort..
Friday I'm taking my son's girlfriend shiner fishing..for hopefully her first bass..Tueday I plan to frog permitting...Tropical Debbie is dumping some serious complaints..we need it.

flhunter91 06-24-2012 04:38 PM

Thank you Chuck! I really appreciate that sir. I wouldn't mind picking it up from you before the tourney. I have to work tuesday morning some time but could come get it from you early when you went fishing. If not if you were home on wednesday I could pick it up whenever you are home. Thank you for your generosity Chuck. I'm looking forward to a better hook set haha

flhunter91 06-24-2012 04:41 PM

And yes we did need the rain very badly. Cool the temperature down for awhile at least. I'll make sure I return the rod in good shape after the tourney Chuck. God bless
