Largemouth injury mysteries

While fishing on a lake i only get to fish for one week a year, one of the guys in our group caught a 4lb 1oz. largemouth. After weighing and pictures, I notice something on the outermost gill plate (outer part of the gill whatever its called). There appeared to be a quasi-circular "injury". It was like a green algae colored patch. We noticed this on several other fish caught by other members of the group later in the week. Anybody know what these could be?

4 ft 1 inch!!!!???? A new world record!!!
I'm sure you meant 4 pounds 1 oz (I couldn't resist)

You might want to contact the local DEC officer. They would likely be interested as well.

there is a parasite that is sometimes responsible for dark colored spots on bass, it is non fatal and it is spread by birds best i can remember.

The ' and " can also stand for pounds and ounces. :hit:

Haemophilus piscium:

A legion of ulcer disease (caused by Haemophilus piscium) is surrounded by a white to gray rim on necrotized skin and a dark to almost black center made up of tissue debris and blood cells.

Fungus will grow on the necrotized skin, and the diseased is generally found on the gill plate.
