opinion on line?

wanting to switch and try a new type/brand of line. I have been a die hard spiderwire user pretty much since the day it came out. I ahve been looking heavily at the PowerPro. any suggestions on a good line. i like smooth casting that wont crimp easy but still has a decent diameter.

Oneshot7 08-04-2009 02:41 PM

You wont regret Power Pro, its my personal favorite. I have also turned a few people on here to it. :D

mohunter82 08-04-2009 03:03 PM

how smooth is the casting on it. with some of the fishing i do i need some DISTANCE. lol

Oneshot7 08-04-2009 03:25 PM

extremely smooth, Just spool it tight. Make sure you either put electrical tape on the spool or back the braided with about 10 yards of small mono. This will prevent it spinning on the spool and costing you a big fish. I can cast real well with it, as far as spiderwire with better strength.

Chuck7 08-04-2009 03:25 PM

Oneshot7 turned me on to Power Pro..

Positives...which are many

A.Casting..not as far as mono..but not bad...all depends on the lure..I'm happy with it

B. Very small diameter

C. No memory..which is great for fishing the curly tail rubber worms..where mono will twist and kink fast.

D. Strong..BUT you must use the palamar knot with it..I use the 20 pound pro..It can still break so set your drag accordlingly..It's muuch stronger than mono though

E. The green line will turn whiteish after a while but does not seem to effect my strikes..

F Works great in baitcasters or open faced spinning tackle..

G. If you are putting this on a baitcaster...make sure you know your reel and drag well..backlashes are nearly impossilbe to fix..and Power Pro aint cheap..

Summary..I've tried nearly all the braids..and this is my favorite by far..
I use 12 pound Trilene Xl for the other stuff..I fish heavy deep Florida hydrilla .

I use Power Pro for worming , flipping , pitching and jigging...and shiners

I use Trilene XL mono for everything else..spinning, cranking ,

mohunter82 08-04-2009 03:39 PM

i use strickly open face spinning. i do alot of white and largemouth fishing on truman lake here in missouri. when i get down on the dam on truman i need something that can handle the huge current, while they are letting thousands of gallons out, with the retrieve and still give me the sensitivity i like. sounds like the PowerPro may be the way to go.

i like the no memory chuck thanks for the heads up..
will the improved clinch knot still hold on the powerpro. that is mainly what i use.

Chuck7 08-04-2009 03:56 PM

no sir..DO NOT used improved clinch..for some reason that knot does not work..I learned the hard way..You should have no problem with it on spincasters.the Palamar knot is very easy to tie..

BUT to be honest with ya..I'm mostly a spinning man myself..If it wasn't for thick vegetation and fishing rubber worms..I would buy nothing but mono...I love spinnning alot more than baitcasters...Braid does not cast as far as mono..I don't want to mislead ya...I mostly use it because it has ZERO memory when worm fishing..and it's great for flipping when fish are green at the boat and you need to pull them out of the cat tails.

Chuck7 08-04-2009 03:59 PM

Here's some 20 pound Power Pro..as you can see ..the diameter is 6 pound test.

you cna't break this stuff with your teeth or hands ..I bring a pair of wire cutters with me.LOL

mohunter82 08-04-2009 08:29 PM

Thanks man. i may have to try some out. its only money.lol. Knots are not that hard to learn. my grandfather was a tournament bass fisherman until they decide to take custody of me. so i learned some of the old school ways of fishing. like my got to lure is still a black and chartruese roadrunner. it may not be what everyone else is catching them on but it still works. ha ha

marlin30/30_drabe 08-05-2009 09:52 AM

braid is horrible for using crankbaits it digs in the spool and it makes loops for cranking mono is the best

Gangly 08-05-2009 10:51 AM

I have had zero issues with braid when using crankbaits. I make sure that the line is on the spool tight to begin with and have had no problems. I love the 30 lb. power pro braid. I have gotten the lures stuck in trees so many times it isnt even funny. I just yank as hard as I can on it until the limb breaks or the lure frees itself, either way I never worry about the line breaking. The Power Pro braid is TOUGH. I haven't broken the power pro braid yet, and thats saying quite a bit considering i have never changed it out and I've yanked it out of trees atleast 10 times in the month alone.

I take that back, I've changed the hook once to a larger hook about 2 weeks ago, but still, the line is TOUGH and casts well.

Chuck7 08-05-2009 12:13 PM

I kind of agree with the the man who uses mono with crankbatis..

I've very paranoid of fish seeing my line..I always use mono when I can...especially with spinnerbaits and crankbaits..and topwater...
Power pro cast decent ..but mono cast incredible...I mean it zings out there.

I only use Power Pro..because it won't twist when I bump a worm..
and when fishing heavy cover..that is it..everything else is mono...Since the author of this thread fishes with spinning tackle ..like me..He has a lot of options..He can load one spool up with mono and one with braid..I try to buy spinning reels in groups of 2 .this way it gives me 4 spools. Before I go fishing I;ll decide which spool I plan to fish

mohunter82 08-05-2009 03:45 PM

i have used probably every different type of reel that had been thrown at me. i started using spinning at the age of 8. (thanks to my grandfather.) and just got stuck on it. i think i might go with a good mono unles im working the bottom of the river with worms or cranks.

Chuck7 08-05-2009 03:52 PM

I'd personally stick with the mono unless you have structure like this LOL
This calls for Power Pro..{ -;
The shoeline is 12 foot deep and the middle is about 15 foot deep..that hydrilla goes straight down...a must for Power Pro..

mohunter82 08-06-2009 05:28 AM

now thats a fishing hole. im jumping in the truck right now and am on the way! lol
Thanks for all the info guys.

m.t.hands 08-06-2009 06:47 AM

if i ever find a floro that i like:s6: i'd use it for my crankbaits and moving baits (the ones with minimal bottom contact), i think the low visability, low stretch, and the dia. of floro makes it the perfect deal on paper, however i still have not found one i'm satisfied with, especially in the area of knot strenght:(

as far as the braid, power pro is my favorite:s4:

Oneshot7 08-06-2009 09:40 AM

I hear ya keith, the stuff is dang near invisible in the water, but I have lost quite a good fish to line breaking while using Vanish.

Chuck7 08-06-2009 10:14 AM

AMen to both of ya...I've read alot of stuff on Flourocarbon..they are still working it..After alot of reading the best one..which I've never used is called P line.

mohunter82 08-06-2009 10:26 AM

They will eventually get it worked out. although for me i still wouldnt use it with my cranks. mainly cause i like to run the bill of my crank along the bottom stirring up mud to look like somthing feeding on the bottom. this requires a little bit more strength in a line

m.t.hands 08-06-2009 10:58 AM

i'm with you on dredging the bottom, for me the weakest link with
floro has been the knot, and i've tried just about every knot i could think of:s6:. Chuck, i tried p-line version and so far it did not impress me anymore than the others( i may have gotten a bad spool, because i get more reccomendations for it than any other), i have heard LFT is supposed to be good, i've got a buddy that is sending me a spool, hopefully i can give a little better review, but as for now i'm skeptical:(

and in the truth it may be all made like the early versions of braid, all braid used to be manufactured by one company (the line/fiber was called spectra fiber), then made to the companies various spec's, colors and such....as far as i know they all still use spectra fiber, what makes the power pro better for me is the coating process they utilize....;)

mohunter82 08-06-2009 11:45 AM

plus a braid that doesnt try to unravel everytime i tie a new knot would be nice. lol thats what got me looking at the powerpro.

triple twist palomar knot. I have never had one fail on me with braid, and I clip them CLOSE to the knot.

An Uni to Uni knot if you are using a leader. When tying to the braid, put atleast 6 twist of the non braid line around the braided line and a normal 3 twists of the braid to the leader. Knot will not break, period.

mohunter82 08-07-2009 06:56 AM

i dont have a problem with the knot itself breaking its the end of the line coming unraveled while im trying to feed it through on my knots. not really a problem just frustrating sometimes.
