It's hard to keep on the hook..but if I was fishing specifically for catfish..I'd use chicken liver...no sinker..for the fish seem to suck it off the hook so you need to see the slightest move of your line..

Worms and minnows are good but you will catch other species as well..

I've used all the 'known' baits and in my experience, Shad(frozen or fresh) works the best.

It is a good idea to take several types of baits if possible.

I've also used whitetail deer heart for bait with amazing results, But who really thinks aboutkeeping a heart in Dec., to use in June?:D

That all depends on what catfish you are fishing for.

Bullhead/Channel: Chicken Livers or cut bait (bluegills or shad)
Blue: Cut bait
Flathead: live bluegills, live big shad

I have great luck with liver. As Chuck said its hard to keep it on the hook so what I always did when I used liver I would wrap it up with a small wrap of the wife's stocking and twist it up with a twist tie and just hook the stocking with the liver in it. Go out the night before with a can of dog food and punch holes in it and throw it in the spot you want to fish. When you come back the next morning the catfish will already be there waiting for you. Good Luck.

chuck the answer to your problem is you need to put your bait in some small panty hose. i learned it on the gon website. i have done it a few times with messy baits.

some of my favorite baits are cut hotdogs, shrimp, liver, hearts, bluegill (whole or cut) i prefer whole, or 2 small minnows on the same hook, or 1 bigger minnow
