28# would suffice. I'm not sure they even make those anymore. As long as current isn't a factor, like in lakes and ponds 28# will do it. I fished for several years with a 28# motor guide on a 16' aluminum with a 35 horse motor. Worked fine.

55# or higher will really move it though!

buy the biggest 12v motor you can afford. Its easy to put the motor on one to slow down, but if your in wind, the higher thrust will come in handy.

I started with a 54 lb on my boat, but after fishing in the wind for one day, I sold it, bought 2 more batteries, and am now fishing in the windiest conditions with my 109 lb :D

RE: How many lbs of thrust

I was told that when picking a trolling motor to get atleast 25lbs of thrust or better per 500 lbs of boat weight. for example my pro team 175 weighs about 900 lbs so I went with a 54 lb thrust motor guide and my super guide 14 I just oredered weighs about 700 so I got a 40 lbs minn kota for it. just keep in mind that using a bigger trolling motor then you need even if you dont use its maximum thrust it will run your battery down faster then a smaller one.

With the newer motors, MotorGuide Digital, and Minn Kota maximizer, they arent too far apart from the smaller motors. Get a size 31 battery from wal mart ($70), and you can fish all day.

I agree with grasshopper a 28# thrust would work fine on
the 14 grumman as it is a very light boat. And for ponds
you need nothing to big.
