Coooold water trout

I was wondering whats the best way to catch trout in rivers when the water temperature is very cold. We have had a mild winter up here inNew England and when the water levelin the rivers go down i would like toethir fly fish or spin. The river where i will be going is rather small, 20 feet wide with some smallpools probally 6 feet deep. where shouldthe fish be, deep or shallow.

Fish a 90 deg, nymph rig. Small nymphs, size 16, 18, 20. If you need more info just ask. I can explain the rig if you need.

Redsox, For the most part in winter water is low and clear so fish will hold in deep water. In winter I concentrate on the deepest runs with slow broken water, behind rocks.

Good luck.

good advice. Also if it happens to be a warm sunny day (for this time of year), look for things to be active around the brightest (warmest) time of day. Sometimes if the fish encounter a few warm days after usual cold weather they wiil get active and move into shallow water (especially if there are any drifting nymphs or even emergers). I've got one little stream inPA that turns red hot with winter stoneflies on these kind ofdays. Fish would also rise all winter (as long as the wind would cooperate) on the Missouri as with most tailwaters (midge-fishing). IF nothing else works, try somebig nymphs (scuds, eggs, shrimp, worms) that are worth the effort for the fish. or even streamers

I like fishing cold water while it is still high it's sloooooww fishing
but the good ones bite and nnnooooo black flies! A small nymph
and time will prove worth while. These were caught in high water.
Good Luck
