For catching cats I always like to use chubs. Dead or alive it doesn't matter if you're going for cats. The best kind are creek chubs also small bluegil work as well. Chicken liver is effective at catching cats, but your right it is hard to hook which it works better if you can string the hook through the tough outer layer a couple times and try not to tare it up to bad cause then it just falls apart. It's messy, it's smelly, and it's a hastle, but hey it works.

And just and update on the name, I had a discussion at work today with several hunters/fisherman and it was almost a 50/50 spilt of calling it a trout line or a trot line so it appears that the name is going to be a regional thing or something because out of 10 people counting my self it was 5 for trot line and 5 for trout line

Two things I have found are true about catfishing,
1. If you want to catch big cats you need to use BIG catfish bate
2. If it dont curl your toes its not catfish bate.
I also usea swivel at either the hook or the line.
