Catfish with identity issues...

I was watching the smallmouth rise on my lake last night and decided to throw some black ants at them. Hooked 3 or 4 when all of a sudden a catfish came up and took the black ant. Was on the small side, but I have never hooked a catfish on the surface before. I always thought catfish were more bottom dwellers.

Cheers,

Dan

Every once in a while strange things happen. I caught one once on a roostertail while spin casting for bass. I thought it was record bassuntil I saw thewhiskers[:@]

Catfish can be opportunists especially when the water is warm, I use to fish tournements and here on the potomac we would catch 1 or 2 a day fishing spinner baits or crank baits we have even caught them on grubs and rubber worms. A 5 or 6 pound catfish will ruin a spinner bait!

i've fished for cats on the surface. you can throw dog food out and it will float and usually the cats will rise and stay on the surface or very close and you can throw a worm with a bobber out there and the cat will usually swallow it while getting some dog food.

I was bass fishing with a Texas rig and caught one on it using a 7" Red Shad Power Worm
That was a shock

Throw slow falling spoons at em in cold weather. They'll bite.

Like alot of you I've caught catfish on just about everything.
The small ones seem to be especially opportunistic feeders.
Plastic worms, crank baits, spoons and of course ANY kind
of natural bait. Most recent was an 8"er while hauling in
striped bass by bouncing a 4" speckled lead slab off the
bottom at Lake Texoma. Those little suckers just want to
eat, they're not picky.

Yeah its funny they'll eat all sorts of things. I've caught several on spinnerbaits/crankbaits. Caught a 3.9 lb. blue cat earlier this summer on an orange/brown crank. Go figure.
