trolling motor
Hi guys,
Just a quick question, a buddy of mine is looking to buy a trolling motor for his boat, its a bigger boat ( 16ft v-hull, with a 220 outboard), i was just wondering how many pounds of thrust are recomended for this size of boat |
RE: trolling motor
i think you have the length wrong. i've never seen a 16 ft v bottom with a 220 on it. maybe a 20 footer. 19 at the very minimum. either way, a Minn Kota Maxxum 74 or 101 should do the trick. nothing better than a minn kota maxxum.

RE: trolling motor
Minn kota and Motor guide web sites both has a selector to choose the right motor.

RE: trolling motor
you could get by with a 55 lbs thrust but Id opt for the 74 lbs thrust, depends if hes hooked up for 12 volt or 24 volt. good luck

RE: trolling motor
with a 16 ft light aluminum, 55 lbs will move you really well. Wire 2 batteries in parallel and cruise around all day on them.

RE: trolling motor
Hey guys thanks for the input,
PS i was wrong about the length its an 18 footer |
RE: trolling motor
Go with a Motor Guide "Great White Series"(Salt Water Rated). Hard to find anybody that sells them anymore.Min Kota has saturated the market place.

RE: trolling motor
noooooo don't fall to the perils of a motor guide. Stick with Minn Kota. Motor guide has too much digital crap. the Minn Kota Maxxum 74 lbs 24V trolling motor is what we got on our 16.5' Lund. pushes that baby around great. Lasts all day. the prop cuts through weeds pretty great. havent had any problems with it. i've used motor guides on other guys' boats and i've hated them.

RE: trolling motor
Deer37 sounds like you've had good luck with the Kota's. There not a bad motor,I have one on a 12'. Owned at least 4-5 Min Kota's. IMO they just don't seem to hold up or built as sturdy as Motor Guides. The new Kota's at least up to about 40 lbs are pure junk IMO. With some hard use, they are throw aways in about 5 yrs. They do have nice props and great thrust. Owned 3 Motor Guides, still have one, sold one with a boat, the other was at least 30+yrs old. It drowned after nephew dropped in lake and sat for 3-4 days. Never seen a Kota even close to 30+ yrs.
With the onslaught of Super Wal Marts the Motor Guides have all but disappeared locally. Whatever your choice, there are no choices any more unless you have a Cabela's or Bass Pro close by. |
