modifying mod 7600
 

I was hoping someone could help me out. I want a rem 7600. The easterner in me likes a pump over a bolt. but I am now hunting elk and want more power than a 30-06. I got a weatherby mk v in 338 win mag shortly after coming out west. It's too heavy!! I would like to know if the 7600 can be rechambered to a magnum caliber ie 338 win mag. Or maybe a short action in 350 rem mag. I guess if its not possible I'll look for a 35 whelen. Any light you good people can shed on this would be extremely appriecated. Thanks alot.

ow I think the only "feasible" thing you could do with that 7600 is have it rebarreled to 35 Whelen. You are limited by the actions strength (thats why they werent offered in mags). They dont have the ram strength to eject some magnum cases as well. But that would be an AWFULLY expensive option for a 7600 if you ask me. If you just are that adament about staying away from a bolt gun, then do yourself a favor then checkout a new Browning Long Trak auto in 300 or 338 mag. They are lighter than Brownings own Abolts and typically extremely accurate.

Sorry ow, I guess Ive had too many beers. I mis-read your question and assumed you to already have a 7600. Since you dont then I agree, lighten up your 338. That is THE elk caliber and probably would be my "one gun for all" caliber. A lil trimming on the metal fluted barrel, skeletonized action etc and a lightweight molded stock would trim POUNDS off your Wby. I personally wouldnt recommend a 7600 for outwest ESPECIALLY someone who is a resident. Likewise the 35 Whelen has abysmal ballistics. Its simply to big and heavy for the 06 case!

Those guns are not designed to handle the extra recoil and abuse that a 338 would dish out to it. I would not attempt it. I'm sure you could find some Joe Blow to do it but I would not shoot it.:(

A much better bet would be to modify the Weatherby to lighten it up a little. Shorten the bbl, remove material from under the bbl, remove material from under the recoil pad. You could get rid of about a pound from a wooden stock.

thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure rem makes a 7600 in 35 whelen. I'll start looking. I think I'll look at a blr too.

Browning once made a pump called the BPR. They were discontinued a couple of years ago. They were available in 300 Win. Mag I know for sure. I would think they were available in 338 also as the BAR is. If not you could have a 300 rebarreled or rebored to 338. I think this is your only viable option unless you settle on a 35 Whelen in the 7600. The only other thing would be to rebarrel a 7600 with a 338-06 barrel and shoot 210 gr. Nosler Partitions out of it. I think I would settle on the BPR.

Grices Gun Shop has 7600's in .35 Whelen. Search the exact addy on google cause i cant remember it. Good luck!

Some of the remington guys on here may be able to correct me, but I thought I remembered going to a gun show and seeing an anniversary edition (engraved receiver with gold in the engraving) 7600 in 7mm rem mag? that was at least 10 yrs ago, so my mind may be deceiving me?
