Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
I'm thinking about buying another gun, something that shoots a little bit flatter then my 30-06, Was looking at a Rem. LSS 700 7mm ultra mag. the guy at the store said that it would kick significantly more then a .300 Win mag, I've never shot a .300!! so I don't know how the recoil is. Just wondering how much more to expect I'm used to a 30-06 and can pound rounds through that all daylong without any dicomfort how would the ulta mag compare?....thanks

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
Gor V if you want some numbers to put on it here ya go.
30.06shooting 150 grain kicks with 18.5 ftpounds of energy 300 win mag 23 ftpounds 300 ultra 32ftpounds 7mm ultra 30 ftpounds so in short yeah...its gonna stomp on ya If you want a flatter shooting gun than a .06 go for a 270 or say a 270wsm The max point blank range on each of these (that is the point at which the bullet has risen and fallen a total of 6inches) is actually as good as the 7mm without getting stomped on. If you want more info on rifle caliber recoil here is a linc to Chuck hawks info...he is a renound gun and ballistics authority. rifle recoil table http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm here see for yourself .... read the article as well to give you an idea of how the MPBR of a rifle is measured rifle trajectories table http://www.chuckhawks.com/rifle_trajectory_table.htm |
RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
It's not that bad. As long as you seat the butt of the rifle properly and not on..lets say your collar bone by accident...then it'll be okay. I weight about 140 and I shoot it no problem. I am into pain a bit though so who knows.

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
I was only comparing basics....there is a huge number of variables when it comes to ballistics/trajectories. Heck if we are going to consider reloading ...none of that is true....I dont reload and therefore was just comparing a few factory loads. I mean you have to have some basic point at which to start comparisons.

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
My brother recently purchased a 7mmRUM and he installed a limbsaver recoil pad (cost $35) said it helped significantly on the recoil. He equated the recoil to about the same as his .270Win. As a side note, he sighted the gun in 3" high at 100 yds. When we moved to 300 yds. the gun was hitting dead on. I was considering purchasing one of these bad boys myself, however there is only one factory load available as far as I know. Remington 140 gr core-lok. I also heard rumors that Remington was considering phasing out this cartiridge if interest doesn't pick up. But as I said just rumors and I'm not sure how true that is. Hope this helps???

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
GorV, my ultramags has significant more recoil than any of my 308's or 270's. And much more than 300win mags I have had.

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
Gor V,
I have not shot the 7mm Ultra, but I have shot it's bigger brothers, the .300,338 and the 375(this one is a thumper) A quality recoil pad is amazing, with the norm-reminton pads(not the R3) the ultra mag do have some stout recoil. You can lern to handle,or you can opt not to buy it. You have probaly heard me raving about the .338 Ultra I just recently shot I was amazed at the recoil after a Limb saver pad was put on. It's probaly best to work up to a magnum if you have not shot one, might save you some scope eye.;) BBJ |
RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
i've owned a couple and have never been a fan of seven mags i don't believe they are very efficient.you just don't get very much for the extra powder you are burning.

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
I have the Rem LSS and it's very pretty and a MAN way, it kicked. There are three things that need to be done:
1. Fit the stock to your length of pull, poor fitting stocks amplify inaccuricy. 35.00. 2. Install a quality recoil pad that can be fitted with your length of pull and contour of your sholder. Pachmar Decelerator. 3. If you install a muzzle break expect ot wear hearing protection, Walker Game Ear in one ear and plug in the other. The muzzle break works and decreases muzzle climb and recoil to the levels of 25.06. |

I say go for it. Just plan on buying a sims limb saver recoil pad. Also do not over look the 300-R.U.M. if you find one at a good price.

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
I own 3 Rums 338,300 and just picked up a 7mm SA for my boy.
I see alot of posts on here about recoil with these. I don't know how you shoot them,But I have found that by setting your rifle in a good rest on the bench for sighting in you should have no problem. In hunting situations you don't feel the recoil as the adrenlin level is high. The 338 and 300 have recoil pads and brakes but I have found no need to brake the 7mm SA as to my 16 year old the recoil is manageable. We did install an after market pad though. I was a little concerned about muzzle jump for follow-up shots that's why I went with the brakes, not to mention I picked up 2" on the barrel length. ![]() |

RE: Question about 7mm rem. ultra mag
ORIGINAL: stubblejumper The extra length of the brake does not in any way increase the effective barrel length as far as ballistics are concerned. |
