Ruger 77/17?

I'm lookin for a rifle that I can take to my Grandpa's farm and take care of his ground hog problem. This would also be my first rifle..I want it to be something I can keep and pass down someday. How about the 77/17? I found this rifle for $430 (retail $595), how much should I invest on a scope and what power?

I like the Ruger in 22 mag as opposed to the 17 JMHO. For a scope, there are several mid priced 3x9s on the market. I like Simmons for the money.

I agree with Big Daddy. I prefer the .22 mag over the .17. But if you can afford a 77 series rimfire, why not just get a .22LR? Way cheaper to shoot.
