300 win mag or 270 short mag???
Heres the problem,, i own a Remington model 700 Classic in 300 win mag,, and i love this gun and have the utmost confidence in it,, when this gun goes off, an animal hits the ground immediately.. BUT!!!! Yesterday, I stopped at a buddies gun shop and he has in a brand new Winchester Model 70 Classic, stainless steel, with the dura-touch stock in Mossy-Oak Obsession, chambered in 270 short magnum... This new rifel is so awesome, and i want it more than any gun ive ever seen.. Question i have is should i trade for it?? I cant afford the entire price now,, and it is on special for a very good price and he offered me a fair price for my 300,, will I build the confidence in the new gun that i have with old faithful,, How does the 270 short mag shtck up with the 300? I hint mostly deer in the midwest, and also have another 300 mag that i dont hunt with because its too pretty,, any advice is helpful,, thanks!

RE: 300 win mag or 270 short mag???
i like them both but for a go anywhere gun i'd go with a 7mm or the 300 cal. mainly because of the bullet weights, i reload so i can shoot 139,140,154,,,,,,in my 7mm guns, if it will only be a whitetail gun i'd take the 270wsm

RE: 300 win mag or 270 short mag???
I had the 300 Win mag in the 700 classic as well. I liked the gun a lot but did trade it in on another rifle. I like to trade and try different calibers and makes and models of guns. If you want the new rifle, I would trade for it. The only reason to keep the Classic is if you are collecting them and don't want to leave that gap. I collected them for several of the years but it got to be to much money and some of the calibers just held no interest to me. Besides that I can't go without shooting them which sort of cancells out the reason I started collecting them. For your type of hunting the 270 WSM will do everything the 300 Mag will do. If you do need the 300, put a cheap composite stock on your other 300 and use it. Thats my Opinion.

RE: 300 win mag or 270 short mag???
You're obviously in the position of not being able to afford everything you want (arent' we all?). To me it's a no-brainer. I'd lose the gun that's so pretty that you don't hunt with it. That would be my first choice. That might free up enough dough so you could afford the two.
Then I'd look at the ballistics, and function etc. of the two guns - the 300 mag. .270 SM you want. If it were me, and I could really only afford a couple of nice rifles, I'd get two that were distinctly different in their function. I truely don't know how significantly different the two are, so I can't answer that question. But this is me- I'm not a gun collector and really don't want a lot of bucks tied up in redundant guns (I have other expensive hobbies, so don't feel sorry for me!). And it seems you're not in the position of just buying up nice guns. I have friends who have bunches of different guns and they enjoy and can affod having a bunch of overlap in function. More power to them - it's a great hobby, just not for me. I collect other expensive stuff. Good luck with your decision! I'm about to enter a similar situation. I'm a one "all around gun" guy right now - a 30-06 that's served me well for 20 years and harvested several different species as small as black tail deer and as large as a couple of 50+" moose. For a variety of reasons I'm probably going to a two gun system and think I'll start from scratch by selling the '06 and moving toward something a little heavier like a 300 mag, and something significantly lighter, but still good for short range white tails. But the '06 does everything so far (they've all dropped dead!), so it's tough. |
RE: 300 win mag or 270 short mag???
I feel your pain! I was just in almost the exact same boat your in.I had a Remington Classic in 300 weatherby, and wanted a new rifle but the money tree isn't in bloom right now.I loved the rifle but as much as I loved it it was just not a practical caliber for most of my hunting needs, and couple that with the cost of ammo as I don't reload,I parted with it just a couple days ago and purchased a Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight in 7mm08.Sad to see the classic go but I'm happy to have a new rifle.I still have a Rem. 700 in 7mm Mag so that will still cover my large animal and extreme range situations. Also it will be nice not to be pounded by the 300 mag recoil. So I say GO FOR IT!It sounds like you really want that 270wsm and it is better suited for most of your need.

RE: 300 win mag or 270 short mag???
Thanks guys for the advice,, someone said to get rid of the gun too pretty to hunt with but thats not an option since it was given to me by my grandfather, but i do like the idea of putting a cheap stock on it to use, when i do need a 300.. I have my calibers covered pretty well as i already have a .204 Ruger, 22-250, both in encore,, a rem model 7 .243, rem 700 bdl .270, rem 700 adl 30-06, and two rem 700 300 mags,,, so i guess ill follow everyone advice and try to spring for the 270wsm. RE: 300 win mag or 270 short mag???
i my self will never trade a gun i really have confidence in unless i have to. and if you have a 270 why don't you trade that in on the wsm? that would make the most sence to me because there is no need for a 270wsm if you have a 270 and if you have a 270 wsm there is no need for a 270.
well i would hate to trade a gun i have confidence in and have used for many years. is it a new rifle? i mean if it is you could prob. have him order you one when you get the money you need. |
RE: 300 win mag or 270 short mag???
If you already have confidence/familiarity w/ that 300, dont trade it, it can be very hard to find another gun you jive with. I like the idea of getting rid of the 270 to try the 270wsm.
