What it bigger? The 44mag or the 50? What do you like better?

Think you answered that yourself? The 44 mag can be loaded to almost as powerful as the 50AE. I like the 44mag cause of available ammo, bullets, and reload data. But you are comparing a Auto to a revolver cartridge. I see the 44 rem mag as a hunting caliber. Not really a carry gun or home defense so much. The 50AE is not what I consider a hunting caliber but more a home defense novalty. Sure it could be used as one. But not something I would want to have a carry gun.

Great answer Bigcountry I second what you said. Try to find factory ammo for the .50AE. Its almost impossible.

If used in a strong single action revolver like the freedom arms the 50 AE can be very powerfull, but so can a 44 mag in the same gun. I'd have to give the edge to the 50ae for power in that setting. IF you are comparing a 44 revolver to a desert eagle or one of the other autos then the power scale would have to go to the 44 mag.

Ok think of it this way, If I gave you a 44mag and a 50ae and they both came with bullets What one would you go hunting with?

If the accuracy was par for both the 50AE and 44mag, and you gave me the bullets, I would go with the 50AE. It does have a tad more punch and hey, I have only used the 44mag for hunting and doing it with a 50AE would be interesting. If I had my own reloads and had trouble finding the 50AE, 44 without a doubt.

Now with the 50S&W, no contest. its the badest, pistol around. You have the killing power of a muzzleloader at 2100fps Muzzlevleocity with a 300gr bullet. 44 doesn't come close. As long as you can handle that bruiser.

The 44 Mag loaded with the proper bullets will cleanly take all Game in North America. To me most of the 50's are big boys toys and more of a novelty than a practical hunting tool. They are to big for conceled carry and not a good option for that anyway. Most 44 Mags are a little big for conceled carry as well ,but its popular so ammo is everywhere and it has plenty of power for hunting. I have had a desire in the past to try almost everything new that comes along. I have however had no desire whatsoever to try the 50 S&W. If the 44 mag won't kill it, give me a rifles.

I agree with James totally. The 44mag, with the right load, will do just fine in any hunting situation within its range. If I were hiking is grizzly country, I'd probably go with the .500 for the shear power of it. I've only shot a 50AE Desert Eagle at a range, so I can't speak for it as far as using it to hunt with.
