Looking into the Hart Barrels.
 

I have a question for everyone.

How many of you have had ANY experience with Hart barrels? I am looking at putting one on my 7 mm STW. It is a Rem. mod. 700 BDL SS. I went with a Douglas Barrel on my 338 RUM and like it . But have heard that the Hart barrels are the way to go.

My question to you is.

Are they worth the money, and are they really that accurate?

I have a hart barrel in .270 Win on a model 70 Winchester action. I had the bolt face trued, the locking lugs lapped and the new barrel installed at the same time so I can not attest to the improvement with just the barrel itself. I paid $300 for the barrel and so far it has been worth it. From a bench vise and using a remote trigger actuator (eliminating 99% human error) 5 shot groups @ 100 yards can be covered with a dime.

I have tried the Douglas, Shilen, and Krieger and some friends have Lilja. My gunsmith claims the Dan Lilja are the smoothest out there. They look smooth as silk thru a hawkeye borescope. I had some trouble with a douglas about 12 or so years ago. The rifling was almost not there in the middle of the barrel. They fixed it. But I lived close to the plant in Charleston WV, so it was easy for me. I know shoot Krieger's, which I am very satisfied.

About all of them are great premium barrels. Especially hart. Last time when looking for a barrel, my criteria was I wanted it fast. Kreiger got it to me quick. What you want to be concerned with more than the barrel manufacture is the ream job by your gunsmith. The crowning and fitting of the barrel. The headspace, how evenly the lugs touch. How sqrare it is to your action. I mean, I have seen good smiths take a 3MOA shooter and recut the crown and headspace with the factory barrel, float the barrel, and adjust the trigger and make it into subMOA shooter.

The premium barrels I have are so much easier to clean. The jag goes thru the barrel so much more even and smoothly. As with factory hammer forged, not smooth.

Douglas are usually the cheaper of the premium barrels. Alot of gunsmiths I have talked to refuse to fit one to a action. For some reason. I think they are fine.
