I am looking for a new .22lr. I was wondering what gun manufacturer makes the best one. But there also is the choice of buying a .17HMR. I will be using it on rabbits and squirrles mostly. Would it be to powerful, and totally rip them to shreds. I would like some advise

I certainly wouldn't even think about a Ruger 10/22. Way over priced, way over rated - terrrible reputation.

Bassman, the 77/22 is a nice rifle, but it has the typical sorry Ruger trigger. My dad has one and after a little smoothing and honing, it shoots very well. I don't know if matt's post is sarcasm or not, but for the money, the 10/22 is a great rifle and with a little cash spent, can be even better.[8D]

The 10/22 is a toy. Its not terribly accurate out of the box and the stock is too short. Its a good gun for plinking or for the gun tinkerer. If you want a good .22 get a Ruger 77/22, an old Remington 541, an old Winchester 52, or a new CZ 452. Out of the bunch, the CZ 452 is tough to beat for the price and quality. The 10/22 will shoot just as accurate as any of these, but only after you spend twice as much money on upgrades.

I'll second that with if you're going to spend a bunch of money trying to get your 10/22 to shoot like a bolt, just save money and buy a bolt to begin with.

The CZ 452's are hard to beat for the money. My CZ452V will shoot with my Anschutz and Sako. The CZ's aren't as refined in the trigger and fit and finish, but they flat out shoot great.

I have had marlins and 10/22's. Can't say I have had any real nice bolts. For what you describe, I highly suggest looking at them. For 150 dollars, you have a 10/22 that can shoot easily 2" groups at 50 yards when you start looking thru ammo that it likes.

And heres the fun part. You have catalogs upon catalogs to upgrade them., modify them, or just about anything you want. I have seen people get 10/22's shooting compitition groups for only 300 dollars. I upgraded one of mine with a trigger with a titanium one and 2.5lbs. pull, and added the heavy barrel combo. I love it. I can't see any difference in this with any of the high dollar bolts I have shot against.

As far as it being a toy. They are correct 100%. Just as all 22LRs are. Even the 1000 dollar comp models. If you want something other than a fun toy, you got to get a centerfire cartridge.

I have a .17 that I use quite a bit. It will tear up ground hogs much less a tree rat or hopper. The upside; the .17 is more than accurate enough to shoot them in the head loosing little meat (I don't eat the brains like some). Downside; the ammo costs more (average $9 a box of 50), and will tearup small game if you hit them in the body. Both the Marlin and Savage .17's have proven accurate although works of art they are not. If you are looking for dual purpose small game hunting/fun plinking get the .22. If you want to do some serious 100 yard shooting for fairly cheap, have the ability to shoot slightly larger game (fox, coon, ground hogs etc.) the .17 may be worth looking at. I did look at a CZ .17 and wished I had waited, I liked the look and feel of it much more then the Marlin or Savage and the price was not much more.

I have a brownig buck mark. I do not know why I bought it over th 10/22 but I did.

I got the target styel and put a red dot on it for plinking and night hunting for coon, oposum, armadillos, exetra.

One thing I realy like is that it wil reliably sykel sub sonic amoe without a hicup. May not be that big of deal to everyone but I like that fact.

Would like to know if the 10/22 will do this?

the only thing I do not like is depinking on amoe (even with glases) with agila SSS I get powder spray in my eyes, not cool. this is because it is an open bolt dezine. Small price to pay to send 60gr sub sonic .22 down range. Does a nice job on small game.
