Remington 7600, 35 Whelen
 

Finally got to get the Whelen to the range for sighting the scope in. First let me say that I purchased the gun from Grice's in Clearfield, PA and received top notch service that I have become accustomed to dealing with them. Ok, to the range, after cleaning the gun and picking up 2 boxes of Remington 200 gr factory loads I proceeded to sight the gun in at 50 yds. By the time I moved the target out to 100 yds, it was printing 3 shot groups of 1/2" after moving out to 100 yds and a box and a half of ammo I shot 2 5 shot groups the first of which was 1 1/2" and the second was slightly smaller with 3 of the 5 touching. I have no doubt that handloading will tighten the groups up. I plan in starting out with I4064 and take it from there. I was nicely surprised with the accuracy potential of this gun and can see it becoming my primary brush gun. Recoil wise off the bench I would estimate perceived recoil on par with a 300 win mag.

I was never lucky enough to find a Remington 7600 in 35 Whelen. That's a find cartridge.Sounds like yours is accurate enough.I managed to find a Ruger M-77 in 35 Whelen.Unfortunately is has the Old Zytel stock.I still haven't tried mine out so I can compare against the Remington.I have factory ammo and new brass, bullets everything I need to roll my own.Good luck with your Whelen,it will do it's part if you'll do yours.

thndrchiken, you didn't buy the gun at Meltzers...are they still in business?. I would jump right on one of those babies...my buddy lives in State College and he is part of Grices frequent buyer program(direct payroll deduction) :Dwill have him monitor their inventory. I thought they wre all done. He owns the pump and the Classic 700 in that caliber.

Yes Meltzers is still in business, no I don't buy from them because after Old man Meltzer died the sons took the business over and overcharge for everything in the store. They also seem to be very unfriendly. I would rather deal with other places than them. Tom Grice told me that they have another run on order and should be in around September.

Your right, Old Izzy had a personality and 1/2 and the son(s) have none whatsoever. I used to buy all my guns there or at Targeteers exclusively and once in awhile at Ramsey Outdoor Store and had Garfield Gunsmithing do triggers bedding and recoil pads.

WHen I lived up there I went to the Englishtown range and there was another range near Lake WayWayanda. I had permission to hunt a 50 acre farm near Washington and we practiced with our rifles there. Now I belong to the Durham Pistol and Rifle Club and it is first class facility.

Thanks Thndrchiker, Please do keep me in mind when they become available. Depends on what price they are asking if I buy or not.I wish I could find a barrel that would go on my old 760 30-06.I know one can be fitted but it would cost more then I'm willing to pay.I talked to a Gunsmith friend. He told me it would be cheaper to buy a new rifle.so I guess my old 760 will stay a 06.
