Nice looking rifle! But I'd get rid of those see through mounts and mount the scope down where it belongs. With a fixed 4X, you'll never have a need for open sights.

Congratulations on your new used rifle dude. You will be happy with your Marlin. I own 3 of them, a 35 Rem, 45-70 and 44 mag. Well made rifles that will last for years with proper care and you can pass down to your son or daughter. Glad to see you opted for the 30-30 over the 357 too. A much better choice.
This wouldn't be my first choice of rifles from my safe for mulies but if you stoke it up with 170 gr FP ammo and keep your shots inside 150 yds you should have no problems. Just take your time and put the slug into the boiler room. Good Luck getting your tag.

Congrats on the new lever ! I purchaced one myself a week ago . . .my third. I mounted a Nikon 3x9x50 on it and had to knock the rear sight out. I've always liked the way the Marlin levers feel and keep buying them like their gonna run out one day. This is the first I've scoped tho.

Based on your picture, you have purchased a Marlin 336CS, not the 336W. The 336W has a "walnut finished" birch stock, and no whiteline spacers. Yours has the whiteline spacers at the butt and pistol grip cap, which indicates that it's a 336CS. I agree with some of the other posters, get rid of the see through mounts. The stock pitch is designed to put your eye slightly above the level of the bore. You need to get that scope lowered closer to the barrel. You'll do much better with the 4X scope than you ever will with the open sights. You should be able to buy a set of Weaver rings and base at your local Walmart for about $16. If your not comfortable mounting them yourself, have your gunsmith remount it for you and bore sight it. Then buy some ammo from him, and get out to the range. I expect that your really going to be happy with that rifle. You got a great deal on it, especially with that Burris 4X scope. Good luck and good hunting.

Nice looking gun. For a hunting/working gun, the marlins are hard to beat. I like the old pre-angle eject winchesters for the nostalgia factor. You got a good deal. I'd keep that scope, put the lowest mounts that will keep the bell from touching the barrel(may have to remove the rear sight) and not worry too much about the variables. All my hunting rifles have a 3-9x that gets set on 4 or 5X and left there. The only reason that I turn mine up is at the range, or to get a better look for antlers on whitetails(and for that I know I should be using my binoculars...)

Good luck

RE: Marlin 336

Hi All

As im sure you can see from my user name im a first timer and i purchased a 30-30 Marlin lever action for my first rifle. I'm planning on using it within the next couple weeks for deer and next year for bear. Could anyone give me any feed back on the best way to maintain the firearm and the best way to hunt with it, stand, walking, bush, field, etc. I'm very excited to use the Marlin, its light weight and seem very smooth. I have only hunted once before and it was a real make shift operation, we did get a doe but i didn't shoot it. Any input would be greatly appreciated in regards to the use of the gun, maintence, optimal hunting setting, ANYTHING.

Thanks

NMH

you got a good deal on the gun and scope i think. the marlin is a better rifle than the winchester. the winchester is not junk but the winchester name and romance is what your paying for. marlin improved the lever gun and that is why they are wildly popular. you also did well with the 30 30. the cartrige will not set the world on fire with velocity but beleive me , you will smile , the deer WILL NOT !!!!
