Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
I am a lefty and down to these 2 rifles. Tikka only offers lefties the Whitetail Hunter in wood stock and blued finish but have heard no negative comments regarding quality or accuracy. The A bolt is offered in stainless synthetic for lefties but have seen several posts less than impressive accuracy numbers. I have shot a BDL 30.06 for 27yrs and am ready for a new rifle. Is a potential 2 inch MOA group vs a 1 inch that big a deal?

RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
Going strictly by the numbers you're giving:
2 MOA means: 2 inches at 100 yards, 4 at 200 yards, etc... 1 MOA means: 1 inch at 100 yards, 2 at 200 yards, etc... Which means if you're shooting out to 200-300 yards, it actually matters. 100 yards and inside, whatever. Now, I wouldn't necessarily say that the A-Bolt is going to give you out to 2 MOA out of the box. I do, however, stand firmly behind the Tikka - there's nothing like shooting .75 inch groups with no work and cheap ammo. [8D] |
RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
Actually, I don't think you'd go wrong with either rifle. I love the Tikka and it's accuracy is guarenteed. But, Every Browning I've owned shot very well. I had a Stainless Stalker (first version, no BOSS) that shot 3/4" groups all day long with Remington Core-Lokt ammo and Federal Premium ammo. And reloads fell into a half inch easily. And that rifle was box stock. It's not hard to find ammo that will shoot good in them, just a little trial and error. Which you'll have to do anyway to find the ammo that Tikka likes.
As much as I love my new Tikka, if I was in your position, I'd probably go with the Browning since it's readily available for Southpaws. |

RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
Tough choice! I have an A-Bolt (.308 win.) and the Whitetail (.223 rem.). I've been completely satisfied with both. Accuracy wise I'm usally slightly better with the Browning. Quality, accuracy, price, and aesthetics are very close. Once in hand they do feel differently. My advice is to at least handle both as much as possible. If it's an option, test fire both of them. Preferably side by side.
I guess I'm not ignorant enough to belive that the Browning is a lesser gun because of the manufacturing country. Maybe for some, Browning's would only be good if they loaded their dies back on the boat and shipped them back to belgium. Good luck, either one is a winner. |

RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
I am not a very big fan of the Brownings(because I only have one,but sure would love to have more) but I have to say one thing they do make great rifles,if they all shoot like the one I have does.Bought my first one (270 wsm ) this past summer and with the accuracy out of the box I wouldn't hesitate buying another in another caliber.I have been shooting close to 60 yrs now and this is the first rifle that I have seen shoot less than 2 in groups @ 300 yds, thought it was a fluke the first time went back another day and done it again.I don't shoot very much at that yardage becuse where I hunt 99% of the shots are less than 100 yds. Most of my rifles are Remingtons with a few Rugers thrown in and now a lonely Browning crammed into one safe.
Saw my first Tikka a couple weeks ago and planning to get one of them this summer to give them a try in a 25/06,if it shoots like the Browning I will be pleased with them too.Where they are made is of no interests to me as long as they shoot. |
RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
Would you rather a Jap Crap BROWNING or a fine crafted Holland&Holland(only about 25grand ) , Sako, Tikka, Husqvarna, Heym...... I have owned just a few Brownings and never felt that accuracy and quality were an issue with them. They are probably the least returned bolt guns out there if a survey were taken. They are not my favorite rifle but I can't take the accuracy and quality away from them. Let me get this straight your going to put a Tiika in the same company as the brands listed above? Please get real. Let me tell you what kind of quality your Tiika has , plastic magazine follower, plastic bolt end sleeve and a one size fits all action ...how many of the guns listed above have those characteristics? Let me answer it for you NONE.. Once you burn out the barrel on your Tiika simply walk over to the garbage can and throw it in because its disposable at best. |
RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
Yes you are right, Tikka isn't in the same class as the others I listed. I was just giving plenty of examples of how European made rifles are better than made in Japan....

RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
I belive the original post was comparing the Browning A-Bolt to a Tikka Whitetail. Not the T-3 and surely not other guns that cost twice as much or 50 times as much. I don't remember Back40 asking if anyone has an axe to grind with Browning. Nor do I recall him asking anyones view on Japanese manufacturing.

Did you know that in America there are 40 lawyers for every one engineer?
Did you know that in Japan there are 40 engineers for every one lawyer? I think the Japanese are really on to something there! They must be doing something right considering that they ar but one little island in the south Pacific, yet their GDP is second in the world (after the U.S., of course). You said: Leave that Made in Japan(Crap) right where it belongs......In Japan Would you rather a Jap Crap BROWNING ....(Made in Japan JUNK!!!!!) I am not a racist, just because someone doesn't like a particular product doesn't make them a racist??? I own a Browning BPS, and it's by far the finest pump shotgun I've had the pleasure of owning...and, God forbid, it was made in Japan. I've also seriously considered buying a Browning A-bolt, but I have little interest in sporter-weight rifles and their one heavy barrelled rifle is way TOO nice for what I want to use it for (spray paint it camo and use it as a coyote rifle). Oh, and since you've obviously never been to Japan (I lived in Okinawa for a year), you probably wouldn't know that the Japanese make cars that will keep right up with that Ferrari you like so much (Nissan Skyline, the Japanese version of the Toyota Supra Twin-turbo, Japanese version RX-7's and the Acura NSX all come to mind). And with a few performance upgrades could probably beat it. But those cars aren't imported to the U.S. because they are not legal here, largely due to our much higher emissions standards as well as import tarriffs and quotas. Mike |
RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
Well said Mike.
I spent two and a half years at Kadena AB in Okinawa. '78-'80. I survived that long by getting involved in the motocross races on the base. They did have some fast little cars on that tiny island. |
RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
I was an MP on Camp Courtney and Camp Foster from Dec. '96 to Dec. '97 (they shipped me over there on Christmas Eve...so typical). I liked it there a lot. I lot of Marines hated it, but I thought that as a duty station it was better than Camp Lejeune. I've not met any other group of people that can party harder than the Japanese. I made the mistake of betting one of our Japanese security guards that I could drink more Sake than he could. That was a big mistake!
I also spent a lot of time working with the SP's on Kadena. Convinced me I should have joined the Air Force! You Air Force guys had it made. The Air Force definately takes care of its troops. Mike |
RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
Japanese quality is beyond Reproach they have beaten the Euros in quality in every manufacturing category known and sell them for less money. Anyone that is not aware of this has lived in a cave the last few years.

RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
Mike, Yes, we were taken care of. Did you get to eat in our chow halls? I couldn't believe it when they served lobster every once in a while. I was a SP. Security side, on the flight line. Only time it sucked was when a typhoon would hit, then we had to eat C-rations. Yech!!! LOL
Oldelkhunter, you got that right. I own a Jeep right now, but wouldn't hesitate to buy Japanese. I couldn't afford the European car prices, or the repair bills. |
RE: Another post on A Bolt vs Tikka...
No, never ate at any chow halls when I was there. Because MP's work odd hours we were often on duty when the chow halls were open so we were paid ComRats so we could buy our food at the Commissary.
I was actually referring to all the activities you guys had on base. Several movie theaters ($1/show), nice golf course, bowling alleys, etc... But I'm guessing the Air Force chowhalls were great compared to the Marine Corps ones too. I never dealt with the flightline SP's much. I never had much cause to go down to the flight line. As close as I'd get would be to sit on the perimeter road and watch the F-15's from the 18th Fighter Squadron do high performance takeoffs. I mostly worked with the LE SP's. Knew a few of the gate guards pretty well too. There was one really cute SP that I wanted to date...until I found out she was engaged but not wearing a ring. Oh, did I mention that the Air Force has all the hot women too...I shoulda joined the Air Force, darnit. :) Mike |
