Opinions on deer rifle
I'm thinking of getting a rifle next spring, for next years deer season. I have recently gotten permission to hunt on some land in a rifle county here in Maryland. After some reading, I'm pretty interested in the Savage 110, in .308, with a synthetic stock, if it's available. What are some opinions on this gun, and what should I expect to pay for one new? I'd like to keep the gun cost around $400, so I have enough to put a quality scope on top. Is $400 even in the ballpark for this gun?
Thanks,
Charlie

RE: Opinions on deer rifle
Thanks guys.
I'm pretty new to rifles, as I mostly bowhunt, and when I do gun it is usually muzzleloader or shotgun slug. The .308 seems to get great reviews, and it sounds like the Savage is right in my price range. I probably won't actually get it until end of winter, so I've got plenty of time to research what I can.
Thanks again,
Charlie

The .308 is a great deer cartridge. But there are some other excellent cartridges out there. I would look at the rifle that I can get a deal on. If that happened to be in .7mm-08,.270,.280,.30-06 I would snap it up.

I think the .308 Win. is the best Whitetail caliber. For a few more dollars you're in the price range of a Tikka or Browning. If you can wait and save a little. You won't be sorry with a higher quality gun. You could also mount a cheaper scope for a year or so. Save for a Leupold or something similar and sell the cheaper scope.
