I believe the 7mm Remington Magnum is a great, flat shooting caliber for deer hunting. I think you would be more than happy with one.

Newbie the FailSafe (Black Talons if you are old enough!!!) is actually several bullets in one. The "core" is lead like you mentioned, but not truly a lead core in the same design as say a Nosler Partition. The steel "cap" is there simply to prevent the bullet from expanding into the lead "core". But make no mistake about it, it is'nt simply a "copper jacketed bullet". Entirely 2/3s of the bullet is SOLID copper, not a jacket or gilded metal. The nose, body, sides and trailing edges is formed from one solid piece of copper. The hole in the middle performs the exact same function as that of the hole in the Xbullet and likewise since it is surrounded by a solid piece of copper, the FailSafe performs just like an Xbullet.

bobo at the risk of peein in CoreLokt lovers Cherios, I personally think Core-Lokts are an antiquated piece of sheut!!! :D By "150 Federal Premiums" I assume you mean the boat-tail bullet which is Sierra's 150 GameKing boat-tail. They are great bullets when fired at 308-30/06 velocities. I grew up poking MS,TN & MO whitetails full of holes with 165 GameKings (Fed Prems) with my ole '06. For what they are they performed great and typically were VERY accurate. I would rate them HIGHLY over the "come over on the Mayflower" Core-Lokts.

Now I just cant wait for someone to bring up the fact that the GameKing aint not spring chicken itself ;)

Is this a good caliber for elk and black bear hunting out to 300yrds.

The 7mm Rem Mag is good for pretty much everything with the exception of the big bears provided proper bullets are used. I wouldn't be afraid to use my 7mm-08 Rem out to 300 yards on the same game.

I love my 7mm. I practice out to 400 yards and wouldn't hesitate taking the shot on a no wind day with the deer presenting a good shot.
Plus, my 7mm kicks a lot less than my previous 30-06 and .308.

Deerslayer the 7 will do all you want it to and then some. I use it for deer, elk and moose it hasn't let me down yet. In fact just weds. I said to my hunting partner after piling up a wt buck at 275 yards....man I don't know why I didn't buy this gun 10 years ago. I ooze confidence when I tote my 7 mag and figure if given a shot I will pull it off. I have taken 2 bull elk with it and worked as good as my 300 wby mag did. This fall I took a face on shot of 150 yards on a 5x5 bull placing the bullet in the left centre of the chest and exit out behind the right shoulder that elk still muster 75 yards but it was all down hill and laid down a paint of blood to follow(completely destroying his lungs). It has toppled 3 moose & many deer with ease. I certainly don't think it is required for deer but it sure works well and for my purposes it is a great choice. You should be very happy with the 7 for deer, elk and bear, just find the right bullet for the job that shoots the best and squeeze.;)

RE: 7mm rem mag

I don't feel that the 7MM Rem mag is too much gun for deer. It is a good all around caliber for everything in North America, except maybe for the largest bears!
As for the Remington Core-Loct's, I recovered a 150 gr. core-loct from a shoulder shot 8 pointer this year. I guess you could say the Core-loct did its job, but I was sorely disappointed in it. The jacket was deformed badly to one side and there was'nt much of the core left to it. Granted, it did hit a major shoulder bone, but at 80 yards, I think a better bullet like the Partitioner would have exited! How this deer managed to run 30 yards is beyond me, had he run for any length though, I may not have recovered him because of no exit wound!
Again though, I love the 7MM Rem. Mag.!

yeap you won't see me using the core lockt anymore. I would use hot loads but the gun has too much head space. I need to get a new barrel for it then I will be using custom loads.

A 7mm is not too large for a white-tail. It's all shot placement. As long as you hit the dear in the right spot you could use a 50 cal. hehe.

I have friends that use .375 H&H nothing wrong with it. Another friend using a 7mm STW, and soon I willbe buying a 7mm Remington Mag.

Go for it you have nothing to loose.
