thoughts on 357 maximum

I' ve inherited a TC contender in 357maximum, I have some factory loads with 158gr. bullets and some handloads with 178gr. bullets. I would like to take it deer hunting this year but am not sure of its effective range. any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks, larry

well, id say about 150 for the gun itself. now the big question is how well you can shoot it and what those loads are. since you are asking the question you probably dont have all that much experience with such firearms so id limit your range to whatever distance you can hold 4" groups from field postitions. i say 4" because that gives room for error. if you tell us what the loads are a more appropriate response could be delivered.

the loads that I' m usingare 170grn semi jaceted hollow points with 20.5 grns of H111 supposed to give me 1730fps. it' s a 10" barrel with a red dot sight. 150yrds is definetly farther than I' d be shooting. I was hoping it would be good to 50-75yrds. after that my groups start to open up. thanks, larry

I would say it would perform at its best at 75 yards and make 100 its maximum..
