which brand of rifle to buy?

Question;

I am going to buy a .308 in one of the following rifles.

Winchester Model 70.....$399.00

Remington Model 700....$380.00

Savage Model 110....$370.00

All of these rifles have synthetic stocks and are at the local Wally store.

Which one would you buy?

Well, the Remington is an ADL for that price and I' ve never liked blind magazines.

The Winchester is a great firearm.

Of those you list, I' d probably go with the Savage. Take it to a good ' smith and get the trigger adjusted and you' ll have a pretty fine, accurate firearm.

Out of that lineup I would choose the Savage unless your Walmart has a nice Rem 710 laying around...that is about the sweetest rifle made out there for the price...can' t get any better.:)

Hey old elk hunter, is that model 710 fall in the same price range?

stubblejumper 10-24-2003 12:36 PM

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

I certainly hope old elkhunter is being sarcastic by recommending the 710.

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

Its cheaper than anything you mentioned but I wouldn' t use it for a tomato stake(reserved for remington 742' s) .SJ knew I was being a bit sarcastic but seriously out of the bunch the Savage and Remington 700 would be my pick.

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

oldelkhunter-While you are on the topic of nicknames for rifles the model 94 is known locally as a canoe paddle due to it' s size and shape. The .303 lee enfields are known as crowbars or doorprops. Many belive both are more suited for these uses than as hunting guns.As for a choice of a cheap bolt rifle I like the 700 action but hate blind magazines.I would choose a howa rifle as they are well made for a reasonable price.

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

Sj some pretty creative names there...I would agree on the Howa also

Go for the Remington 700. Great gun for the money and you won' t regret it. I' m shooting the exact same in .308.

What exactly is a Blind magazine?

stubblejumper 10-24-2003 08:54 PM

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

A blind magazine has no floorplate that opens to load and unload the magazine. You must load and unload the magazine one at a time through the action.

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

Which means pinched fingers or cycling the bolt to unload. Not always the safe way to do it.

Model 70 Winchester, But any of the 3 over the 710 it' s a piece of crap!!

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

Blind magazine is not a bad thing...I have an ADL (among other guns _with_ floorplates) and no, you don' t have to fully cycle the round to unload it. All you have to do is push the round forward enough with the bolt to release it from the magazine lips. Since this is not controlled-round feeding, the cartridge will become loose in the chamber area. Very easy to unload. From there, just pick the round up. There are advantages to blind feeding too....Don' t have to worry about the floorplate popping open and dumping your rounds on the ground nor do you have to worry about losing your DBM (detachable box magazine). ;-)

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

I must just be luckier than most as in over 30 years of hunting I have never had a floorplate open accidently or a detatchable magazine accidently fall out of the gun.

Hard question to answer

Mainehunt;

Your asking a question which is hard to answer. Since everyone has his or her favorite brand of rifle. It' s like asking " What make of truck should I buy." Because Ford lovers will tell you a Ford all the way, and so on and so on. Your best bet is buy the gun that fits you, and the gun you like. Go to a few different gun shops and asks some questions to the gunsmiths. Ask them what guns they suggest, and what guns they don' t. They' re the one' s that work on them, and can suggest to you the best options. I myself have always been a Remington man, But if you talk to my brother he' s been a winchester man all his life. Although I can always out shoot him....LOL. But I suggest you buy what you like.

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

In response to stubblejumper' s earlier post....Try unloading a floorplate with stiff, cold hands (with gloves on (or off for that matter) while in a deer stand before coming down. Pretty dang frustrating to have even 1 or 2 rounds fall to the ground to be hidden by leaves never to be found.

stubblejumper 10-26-2003 12:43 PM

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

Hunt127588-I have never had a problem unloading with a floorplate in the cold and few places get as cold as saskatchewan or alberta in december. It certainly is less hassle than unloading through the action.

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

Didn' t mean to start a fight about the magazines.
But I appreciate the responses.

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

I' ve never owned a Winchester but i own both Savage and Remington and like them both. If i could only choose one it would be Remington. As for the top feed or floorplate i' ve also had both and i' ve never had a problem with unloading the top fed so i don' t have a preference with either.

I have decided on the Savage Model 11G in .308

Wood stock, blued metal, cut checkering. $367.34 at the local Wal-Mart.

I just checked the zero on my Savage .243 (Model 110) 100yards/Factory ammo(Winchester CPX100grain bullets)

1" and 1/8" group.

Love it. :D

Macdaddy 10-30-2003 07:55 AM

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

Mainehunt,

If you have a 243 why are you purchasing a 308? Unless you have a larger cal gun like 30-06, 300, 7mm, why buy a mid cart gun?

JMO-
if you start with a 243, I would jump to a 7mm or 300win. I shoot a 7mm with 139gr hornady SPs and it doesn' t kick much more than a my bros 308 but I can bump it up to 175gr for elk and knock em down at 300yards.

Just wondering.

Whoever said that obviously doesnt know much in my opinion. One of the finest bolt action battle rifles ever made (the experts opinion not mine). I' m guessing it could withstand a little deer hunting. I took a nice buck last weekend with my 1942 No4 MK 1.

RE: which brand of rifle to buy?

Well, llike I said, I bought the Savage model 11 in .308, wood stock, blued.
I put a scope on it, one that I already had. 2.5-10x44mm, wideview.

I took 5 shots to zero it, the sixth shot killed a doe at 140 yards. I used the Winchester CXP2, 150 grain power-points. Deer was broadside, the bullet hit right behind shoulder, halfway between belly and back. Complete pass through, broke one rib on nearside, two ribs on farside. Took out both lungs and top of heart was shredded. I thought that the hit was too high to hit the heart, but I believe that a splinter of the rib is what hit the heart.

Either way, I' m very happy with my decision to buy the Savage. The trigger pull is actually pretty good, haven' t measured yet, but I' m happy with it for a hunting rifle. Looking forward to shooting some groups of of the bench. I think the 243 is now my son' s new rifle.:D
