Default Please compare the Remington 783 to the 770

How do these guns stack up to each other? I know the problems that people have with the 770, but get the sense the 783 isn't plagued with the same issues.

I noticed 783s are chambered in 300 wing mag, an attractive caliber, but that brings up the question of the stock. It's flimsy, as is often the case with the guns in that price range. I'm wondering if it's just too light for the 300.

Easy there, Father. A question about choosing the lesser of two evils would be your 666th post.

When I think of Remington rifles nothing but the 700 is even worth mentioning as far as centerfires go. The 770 was a POS from everything I've read. The 783 however seems to be an OK rifle as far as an economy rifle goes. These "economy" rifles seem to be the trend these days. I guess in an effort to boost sales and get more people shooting/hunting. If it were my money I'd save more and get a 700 if you're set on Remington. But if you're on a tight budget check it out. Also check out Mossberg, Ruger and Savage. The Ruger American is getting good reviews.

Stay away from the 770... The 783 is a little better. But in entry level rifles I'd suggest a ruger american before the 783.... The best suggestion in that price range though is look for used savage 110/111/stevens 200s.... I picked up a stevens 200 for $200 a couple months back. If you watch for them they are available.

Also consider the Remington Model 7 if you're going with a short-action cartridge. I like the feel of their actions far better than the 700s.

I just picked up Mod 783 in 243 for a throw in the truck gun and am quite impressed with the accuracy. I only own Remington rifles/shotguns and will say it doesn't compare to my Rem 700 Mountain rifles or Rem 700 BDL models, but for just a gun to throw in the truck its fine for me and the price is right. Looked at Ruger / Savage and don't like the cheap plastic detach magazines.

I'm not really set on a Remington. More interested in the 300 Win mag caliber at the price point. Get up in the .30 magnums and you have to jump to the next quality and price level. I wouldn't bother with that as I don't need this rifle badly enough to spend a lot.
