RE: wincherster model 70 pre 64'
What' s the difference between the pre 64' and post 64' . I' ve heard people looking for pre 64' and can' t find em, so they go with a remington or something else. What makes the model 70 pre ' 64 so special, or, rather, different from the post ' 64' s?

RE: wincherster model 70 pre 64'
Ok the pre-64 is a mauser style bolt action rifle with controlled feed ...3 position wing safety and cut checkered stock. It was pretty much well built for its time and very costly to produce as a result of that. It was replaced by the post 64 Model 70(economy measure) which was a push feed design but kept the 3 pos wing safety and had a cheaply made stock with impressed checkering..sales immediately plummeted and Remington got the lions share of the bolt market with its 700 which was introduced around that time period.s...after a couple of years of the post 64t they added a rail to the action to make it smoother and a little while after that realized they would sell more if they reverted back to the pre 64 design with some changes ..it is now CRF with a 3 position safety and handles a ruptured case better than the old design ever did...Its now made on CNC machines in lieu of the manual machining methods of old.

RE: wincherster model 70 pre 64'
There' s a pre-' 64 that keeps popping up in the gun shops and pawn shops around town.
Last I saw, it was going for $800 or so. I wouldn' t buy a pre-' 64 for that much, knowing that more than one person has been dissatisfied with it. |
RE: wincherster model 70 pre 64'
ok thanks guys, that what i was looking for. One last question though, what' s a mauser style bolt?
THanks AK |
RE: wincherster model 70 pre 64'
Mauser style bolt refers to the way the extractor is mounted on the bolt...it does however not have the third lug like the 98 mauser. If one showed up at my door begging to be bought I would and use it as a collector piece or as is for hunting. But just let me be a little opinionated for a second and Let me slip into my flame proof suit for a minute and say that I wouldn' t waste my time with one..The post 64 CRF is better except for the cheap extractor that Winchester puts on it...I much prefer the new Ruger 77 MK II action to either...smoother ...handles a case failure better and no extractor problems...lower priced and based on the model 70' s and M77' s i have owned a way better shooter...just my 10 dollars worth of opinions.

Ok, that answers my questions.

RE: wincherster model 70 pre 64'
The Ruger MK-II action is not a true CRF action though. Look at it the next time you feed a shell and notice that the bolt on the Ruger does not hold the shell within the bolt face. Therefore, if you were to turn it upside down during feeding a shell, it will fall out. Many people think Ruger action = Winchester CRF action. It does not.

RE: wincherster model 70 pre 64'
Also the Ruger safety is not part of the bolt like the winchester. The pre 64 action was a little longer too. IMHO the best part of the pre 64 was the cut rifleing instead of hammer forged.

oldelkhunter, I don' t know which one is safer, I' m not an engineer, but I' ll take your word for it.
About the cut rifleing though, all you have to do is check the benchrest shooting seen, and very series varmit shooters, 99% of all the barrels they use are cut rifeling and usually replacement barrels. I do agree with you that todays rifles are stronger, because the steel alloy is stronger, although the craftmanship and attetion to detail as slipped through the years. I could be wrong but I think I have seen some pre 64' s with chrome lined bores. |
RE: wincherster model 70 pre 64'
I had a few pre 64 Model 70' s before the were overpriced and sought after. They were a good rifle but I would never pay the price they ask for them now. In my opinion they never were the rifle that the model 700 Remington was and is. Many people look for the Pre 64 model 70' s to bulid a custom gun. I think its more snob appeal than common sense. Thats just my opinion though for those who want to do it, its more money for a few of my gunsmith friends.:)
