S&W M&P Shield
I bought a Shield 9mm as a carry gun recently. After cleaning I took it to my pistol range with both new magazines (8 round and 7 round) loaded with Remington bulk ammo. Slow fire with two hands it put all 15 rounds into one 2" group with no flyers at 10 yards. That was much better than I had expected from such a small pistol.
I finished the box of 100 rounds with similar results and no problems at all. It functions exactly like any other M&P. Same trigger, same disassembly, etc. It is not a pocket pistol like a LCP but it is small enough that it tucks away nicely when attached to a belt by a small leather holster. This is a very good small pistol and the price is right. |
I have been wanting to get the same gun. I have seen some very good reviews. A coworker has the full sizes M&P as well as the compact version...both shoot well.

Correction:
I just noticed that the distance to the target in my original post was wildly wrong! The target was 10 yards from the shooter, not 25 as I originally posted. Brain malfunction. |
I purchased one for my wife after she acquired her Concealed Carry Permit. She absolutely loves it.
|
I've been very impressed by many of the compact and micro models out these days. We - as shooters - imposed this unrealistic expectation of accuracy for such tiny firearms, but the industry has delivered. My wife's LCP is one of the most accurate (non-custom) pistols we own, for no apparent reason - just good design.
150yrs ago, the "belly guns" of the day in these size classes were terribly inaccurate and the triggers in them were horrid, but long range accuracy and silky, light operation wasn't needed or expected - hence "belly gun." It's amazing what these things can do now. |
I bought one for my 18 year old daughter and she really likes it.
|
One of my sons purchased one and it shoots wonderfully - for everyone who has shot it.
|
A buddy of mine has a 9mm Shield. We went to the range and I put a couple magazines through it.
I was impressed and have been seriously thinking about getting one but I really don't need it. Maybe one day if I can find a good deal on one. |
Had mine for a week now. Really nice gun for the money and take down/ cleaning is easy. Very accurate for a small handgun.

Really nice piece. My wife even liked it... might get another for her. Got to figure out what kind of CC holster I want. Well worth the money and I got mine for 389. Got a liberty drawer safe for it when the grand kids are around.
|
Just let me say first that I'm in no way affiliated with this company. I'm just a very satisfied customer.
http://www.talontraininggroup.com/ You mentioned that you need to figure out what kind of CC holster to get. I have about a half dozen or so total of the Talon IWB holsters and they also have a IWB Tuckables. Go to their site and they have all their holster shown plus they have several different videos, one of them shows how the Tuckable works. That's hard to believe how reasonable the Shields are selling for. |
Thanks I'll check them out. I had a hard time getting my shield because it had to be one with a thumb safety and the non safety models are more in demand. My gun dealer finally found one and got it for me.
|
I picked up the Gunvault XL 1000 series for the Shield 9mm we have, fits into my nightstand pretty well and I find it is easy to open quickly. Keep the passports and SS cards in there as well as our emergency credit cards and cash. tractor Supply carries them.

I have experience with pistols that are more accurate than the Shield but harder to conceal. Also with pistols that were easier to conceal but less accurate. The Shield balances the roles of accuracy and concealability very well, it is a good firearm.
|
Had my shield now for a little over a year now and like it a lot. paid $319 for it think total was like $350ish. The only thing I have done to it is the Magguts +1 conversion.

I picked one up last week. I have yet to shoot it though. It looks just like a scaled down version of my full size M&P. I too am looking for a concealable holster. But I have an additional problem in that I need a left hand version.

I'm going to go ahead and say it. The 9mm Shield is a revolutionary pistol. It does exactly what it is supposed to do better than any of the competition. It it solid and build extremely well. For the money, nothing comes close.
|
I like mine and can report it doesn't care what I put through it for target ammo. So far I have run 4 different types of cheap target ammo through it and not one problem.
|
I have had two. Great pistol.
Now my brother has one and son in law has one. I don't have one again. |
The Holster Store, St. Cloud, FL makes high quality leather holsters at a fair price and can make a LH version in any holster in their line. I own several of their's from the small auto for my Taurus TCP up to one for my 1911.
|
I had one 40 cal and it kept locking open with ammo still in the magazine s&w fixed for free but I can't trust a gun after that since it's a carry piece so I sold it. FYI I have had many s&w over the years and liked them all maybe I just had bad luck with mine?

But then again maybe you did get a lemon. It happens. |

How many rounds did you put through it? IMO you should put at least 200 rounds through any semi pistol to loosen it up a bit. Granted it should work perfectly from the factory but shooting it helps.

And for you leftys out there, they can make any holster they have in a LH version. |

Champlain check out The Holster Store in St. Cloud, FL. They make good quality holsters at a reasonable price using high quality leather. I personally like the Pro Carry. I have about 5 or 6 of their holsters.

After reading this I went on Alien Gear and purchased a paddle holster about 9:30 last night. I couldn't sleep after my surgery and came down on the computer.
I received an email that is was shipped. WOW talk about fast!!!! |
Did a lot of looking at Aliengear holsters after your post Bronco and now it keeps coming up as pop ups on my computer. I'll probably succumb to the pressure and pick up a cloak tuck 3.0. Sounds like a comfortable IWB holster at a great price. Must be the post surgery buying urge.
|
I got that Alien Gear, put it on, and really didn't like it. I called them up and returned it today. I dug around my holster drawer and found a Pro Carry from the previously mentioned The Holster Store. The Shield fits perfectly and rides nice and high.
BTW I shot the Shield the other day with 115 grain XTPs and it was shooting 5" low at 12 yards. It was all I had on hand at the time. I will be trying it again soon with 124 gr bullets and see what the POI is. |
I've been shooting the crap out of my Shield. I had a couple FTF initially but after another stripping and cleaning I believe it was a small piece of debris in the firing pin area restricting the movement of the firing pin. Since then about 200 rounds with no failures. Nice pistol and more than accurate enough for what it is for - personal defense. Firing quickly I can empty the mag and keep all rounds in a 5" area center mass at 12 yards. Taking my time I can easily cut that group in half.
|
I am still happy now that I have had the Shield for almost a year and have put over 500 rounds through it. Not a single malfunction.
Sometimes I carry it in the DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster and other times in a DeSantis OWB. It does not fit as well in my pocket as an LCP but it does work. |
Hard to beat a G43 for a concealed carry gun, but I do like the look and feel of the Shield. I understand they come in .45 nowadays too.
|
This company does great work on custom holsters for about any handgun. MTRCustomLeather.net They are in NC. I had them make a holster for my Kahr MK40.

I realize this isn't a new thread but I remembered it about the S&W Shields.
I picked up a S&W 45 Shield a little over a week ago. I couldn't pass up a brand new 45 Shield W/O the thumb safety for 369.00. I'm impressed with it already even after what I'm going to tell you. I only put a magazine full of factory ammo and it didn't miss a beat. It shot so nice. Here's where all that changes. I have some 45 ACP reloads that were loaded in 5/89. That's almost 28 yrs ago. The sizing lube has seeped out over the years from different temperatures. It has formed a ring of this sizing lube where the bullet meets the case. I had the same problem with my SR1911. It will feed but won't let the slide go into full battery. I cleaned a few hundred of them a few years back and the SR1911 ate them up once I cleaned that ring up. These are 230 gr cast bullets. I have probably a couple thousand or more that I need to clean, I'm sure once I do the Shield will eat them up like the Ruger did. |
