Youth Shotgun/ Girls gun ?
 

I need advice on what to get a 11 yr old girl for a first shotgun, this will mostly be used for Deer hunting ( close range shots ) in Va. Does not need to be super expensive but lightweight.

I purchased a Mossberg Bantam shotgun for my rather small 12 year old nephew.
It has a short stock and fore grip and come in 12 or 20 gauge. He uses it for duck and deer when hunting with me.
IMHO a perfect first shotgun for a kid.

H& R slug hunter 20 g. Don't get bull barrel.. regular barrel lighter and cheaper.

look at the Mossberg 500 combo, about $350 at Dick's Sporting Goods, comes with a rifled/cantilever barrel and a scope that is worthless, & a 26" barrel with a few chokes. If need be you can have the stock cut to size and once the child grows you can use wood glue to put the cut piece back on

Well I can give you three choices. 1. Rem. 870 Express 20 ga youth, 2 Mossberg 500 youth model and 3. Rossi break action single shot youth combo (you can get it with 20 ga, .22 lr and .243)

I really like the first choice listed. My wife likes her 870 Youth better for most hunting than other shotguns that she owns, including some that are much more expensive. The barrel can be swapped for a longer one for the dove field, but she generally likes the short barrel that came with it. She is deadly on ducks with that little shotgun.

Uncle - I bought one for my grandson for when he is old enough to go hunting with me. I liked it so much that I went and got another one for myself. I use it for turkey hunting. It is a pleasure to carry in the woods all day and is plenty effective out to 30-35 yds on turkey with 3" #5s

I bought my daughter a Rossi Tri-fecta a couple years back as her first rifle...1: It was on-sale and inexpensive (less than $200) (in case she decided she didn't want to hunt it wasn't a huge investment)... 2: It had both youth and adult stocks...3: it provided 3 barrels (flexibility) for her to ease into shooting....22LR, 243 WIN and a 20g barrel...she was able to start on the 22 barrel to get comfortable and as she moved up she didn't have to become familiar with new gun and therefor adapted to larger "bang" quicker...she's very small framed...started shooting the 22LR before she was 6 and by age 8 was shooting the 20g and 243 like a champ and has moved up to a Weatherby Vanguard in 243. That being said...can't go wrong with a 870 or 500.

I can see where that would be a handy turkey shotgun. I have shot some clays with my wife's and I can hit fairly well with it unless I have to shoulder it in a hurry. The short stock fools me every time I bring it up but does OK if I can put it into position before calling for the bird.
I have given two other identical shotguns to people as gifts. Solid shotgun at a great price.

I had the Rossi 3-barrel combo with the 20 Gauge single-shot shotgun and it kicked like a Mule and that was for me just sighting it in I'd hate to see a Young Youth Hunter try to handle one!

Buy a Nice Remington,Browning or Mossberg 20 Gauge and learn Your Girl to shoot and handle it!Some shorter Guns will cause more recoil for a Younger Hunter,some times a heavier longer Gun is better and simply let them hunt in a Blind or keep a good pad or rest handy for them to use!
