Hmmm. Not to bust your bubble, but there's a lot of redundancy in that list. I'd be comfortable carrying any one of them anywhere in the lower 48.

My suggestion would be to either fill out the bottom end with a .204, .223, .22-250, or maybe a .243 - OR - fill out the top end with a .338, .375, etc.

Adding a .30-06 or .308 is just more of the same.

+2. What would be the point?

If your set on another 30 cal I'd go the precision rifle rout in .308 or .260 Remington and learn to shoot at longer ranges.

I would get something better suited to hunting something other than big game.A .223 springs to mind.

Must be some unwritten law about redundancy in rifles that I am not aware of.

.204 Ruger....shoots flat and accurate. I have THREE of them and alot of other redundant rifles.

It is nice to have more than 1 rifle in the same cal I hear ya I woundn't mind getting a new long or short tract browning BAR in a 30-06 or 300wsm

Get what lifts your skirt....never mind what everybody else thinks / says.

You definitely need a varmint/prairie dog rifle....IMO

goatbrother 02-29-2012 11:06 AM

Maybe a 25 caliber or 6.5mm? Or maybe a little bigger say 338, 358?

That's fine advice - really, provided you don't come on here and ask the question first.

I'd also add something on either the top or bottom end. .223 or .243 on the bottom, or something like a .338WM on the top. Nothing at all wrong with a good .30-06 though.

ah heck get a thumper, either a 358 win (my choice) or a 35 whelen. I sort of agree with bigger is better

I was thinking the same thing everyones gun safe needs aome sort of 30-06 like maybe in a browning bar.

The .45-70 is a fun old cartridge with a lot of nostalgia behind it. And still packs a whallop that is plenty for any NA game. Maybe in a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun or Browning 1885 single shot.
Or you can go the complete opposite end of the spectrum and get a .204 or .22 cal centerfire.

Sheridan 03-01-2012 06:27 PM

Realistically - you will use a smaller caliber gun far more than you will ever use a 30 or 40 cal.

Truth be known !!!
