I'm looking at the 7-08 also.I'm actually between the 270, 7-08 and the 308. The only down fall, in my area, is ammo availibility. The other two are far more availible.

My #1 choice as far as a rifle is Winchester model70 extreme weather.Another one i like is the Remington 700 CDL SF.But you need to pick the rifle that feels the best in your hands.

I cant for the life of me understand the old "ammo availability" thing these days.You can order it from local shops a ton of net sites or is a year not enough time.

You live in the Adirondacks...............if I was to come out there on a whitetail hunt and "some how" they /I lost my ammo.

Could I leave "deer camp", drive to the closest store and find "my ammo" on the shelf ?

Can't wait a year for it..............need it now & need to be able to find it anywhere/everywhere.

Sheridan summed it up in his last post,Bernie. I'm not likely to loose my ammo........but you never know.Is it problem to get mail ordered ammo sent into NY? I believe BassPro and Cabelas dont ship ammo to NY,not sure about companies like Midway and Ables.

As Sheridan said, it's nice to be able to buy your ammo locally. I'm helping to keep someone in my community employed if I buy at the local store. The cost increase I pay is slightly above the cost I would pay when you add in shipping as well. A few extra cents per round will not break the bank for me.

If not locally, then at least you want to get the same/similar rounds in the worse case scenario from the local gun shop where you are hunting.

Everyone forgets/loses their ammunition at some point in time. It happens to the best, and worst, hunters around.

Actually around here ammo for the 7-08 is easy to find.There are two hardware stores and two small gun shops that stock it all under 10 miles away.One even stocks ammo for the 7x57 which is what I've shot mostly.I've bought ammo from BP and Cabelas in the past but now I reload so I'm not sure if anythings changed with them in that regard.

7mm-08 is a great caliber. You already have a .300, between those two you will be set for anything you ever want to hunt, most likely. I'd take the 7mm-08 over a 7mag any day. My personal preference would be in a Remington model 700 or model 7

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess I was just looking for a new deer rifle. I also have a model 760 30/06. The 06 needs to be redone and needs a new scope. I don't know if I should get that redone and a new scope. The problem is that it was my grandfathers gun And is very sentimental...should I use it or not? I was thinking 7mm-08 but there was a few suggestions for 270 because I have a 300 and a 30-06. What to do? Any further input with these guns is appreciated....

First thing is to put your grandfather's gun back in good working order with a new scope !


Some call a .270 & a .30-06 the "perfect pair".

..........and then you can always call on your .300 (I assume win mag) for the big boyz !!!

I'd recommend the 7-08...there is little difference between the '06 and the 270. And while the 7-08 will perform similarly (although sacrificing extreme long shots), the recoil is significantly less. No brainer, if it were me making your decision. Of course, it is your decision...good luck!
