I've got one in .270 and absolutely love it. I can shoot a box of shells thru it at the range and it doesn't bother my shoulder at all and I'm a little guy (5'4"/140#). In the last 2 years I've taken 7 deer with it anywhere from 50-225 yards and it is a tack driver!

I just bought one in 280 Rem. It's a good handleing gun. My other 2 rifles are Model 70's in 25-06 & 243 and I can't tell much of a difference in recoil and my X-Bolt is probably a good pound lighter than my Model 70's.
If you want something in between a 270 & 7mag...look at a 280.

The 7mm Rem. Mag. and 270 Win. are effectively the same "caliber" (bullet diameter).... difference, obviously, is the cartridge case. The 7mm Rem. Mag. much larger case and therefore is loaded with substantially more powder charge. It is one of the best selling cartridges developed by Remington. Most folks I know that use this round for deer prefer the 150 gr. bullet weight.
The 270 Win. is one of the best and most popular rounds for deer sized game. It is a 30.06 Spr. case necked down to 7 mm. It handles a 130 gr. bullet superbly. You could not go wrong with either.
As for recoil, if you are comfortable shooting a 12 ga. shotgun load, then you are plenty good to go for a 7mm Rem.
