Personally, I will not allow a lead sled, vice or similar rest to be used on my rifles or shotguns. A long gun is not made to have the butt against a solid object that does not move, and some have cracked the stock as a result. I will use sand bags or a rest that supports the stock with the butt against my shoulder.

The lead sled when loaded with to much weight can certainly damage the rifle stock on heavy recoiling rifles. I personally have never used one but do know someone who owns one and uses it for his 375H&H. He said he put to much weight in it the first time and damaged the stock.
When I shoot my heavier recoiling rifles I use a PAST shooting systems shoulder pad. It slips over your shoulder and is a gel filled pad. That helps tame the recoil on my rifles and I am able to shoot the rifle more than I could before I had the pad. Also I can shoot it from different shooting positions like prone, sitting, kneeling, etc. |
Find a discontinued Outers Varminter rifle rest on EBay....

Bipod and a good rear bag...or sandbags and a rear bag...

I use the MTM rest.It works great and you can adjust the amount of weight in the compartment so there's no chance of damaging the gun.

I'm with Jeepkid those are the only setups I use. I have a lead sled I won at a banquet it's a conversational piece is all. I can't stand trying to wrap myself around a lead sled.

i have the FCX Lead Sled and love it. One of the best investments i made for being able to get a rifle down steady and help with load development. It weighs 23lbs naked so i dont bother with extra weight.

........ All very true. Just can't get anywhere near comfortable with a Leadsled. I do all my benchwork with an adjustable front rest and rabbit-eared rear sandbag at the toe. It's the free-recoil method. |
