Winchester 71 being made again..
 

... Just got a new flier from Grice's Gun Shop in Clearfield, PA. today. "New for 2011..Taking deposits now" Winchester Model 71 in .348 Win. Uncheckered Grade 1 Walnut..Marble's Gold bead front sight.. Buckhorn style rear sight. Tang safety.
These must have been slightly "revamped" to include the tang safety, as the originals did not have it. Priced at $1199.95.. Anyone seen one yet? Looks like I'm gonna have to drive up there and have a look-see...:cool2:...

Haven't seen one yet. I used to have one of the originals. The 348 is a fairly potent round and the 71 is a strong slick action. But I would prefer if they remade the 1816 in 45-70.

you seem to have the buy-i-tis real bad. I heard of a .338. But a .348 Win must be for one of those PA armored plated deer at thousand yards. Talking about a big caliber, I'm getting a .35 Rem ready for hunting in you neck of the woods. Not only is it old; it got paid for decades ago. Good luck with those armored plated deer. I'll try to avoid that area of PA.

.... Just a bit of history... The 71 Win. was produced from 1935 (only 4 units made that year) until 1957. It was made in .348 Win. only. Approximately 47,000 guns were made during it's 22 yrs. of production, and a LOT of them found their way across our Northern border to Canada and further up into Alaska. Production ceased on them due to the fact that they were costly to make, and were relatively heavy.
It's not about armor-plated deer here..:wink:.. it's about nostalgia and a link to the past, just as the re-introduction of the 1895 Win. several years ago. The original Model 71's, of which I own a 3-digit ser. no., were made in two models.. a standard grade, and a deluxe grade which had checkering and the optional bolt peepsight. There were two different tang length models also, with the "long tang" being the earlier production, the "short tang" the later.
The next time you're at a gun show, see if you can find any originals. They are still "out there", but are commanding some serious money when found. That's what it's about.

Not me I shot mine and it shot very well. I had the deluxe and I bought it at a gun show in Florida. I was looking for one for a while and when I examined it I aske the guy how much he needed to get for it. When he said $550 - I snatched it up. I used it for 3 years and sold it for $1600. Not a bad profit.

Have not seen one yet. But I did pick up one of the Browning 71's (a reissue of the Win 71) in 348 a couple of years ago. They made about 3000 of them in 86-87 total (carbine and full length)...mine is a carbine...NIB and hasn't been shot...kinda a shame as it is a beautiful gun.

I'm hoping that they introduce some carbines next year and possibly some hi grades. It would be interesting to have a look at these new rifles first hand. From the website, they don't appear to have a rebounding hammer like the 1886s do. I'm not sure if that was just the prototype or not. I had ordered one of the new 71s but when Japan fell into the ocean back in March, I cancelled the order and sourced out an original in pretty decent shape.
