Just purchased a Savage 220F slug gun, what's the word on it?

Has anyone been able to shoot a 220F yet, whats the word? Good, Bad or Indifferent, I want to hear it all! I currently hunt with a 20ga & 12ga. H&R Ultra Slug Hunters, I love them both! There are a couple wooded spots which i deer hunt and have had multiple coyotes come in (as long as it's not opening morning, game on!) and have only been able to take 1 each time. I would like to get an extra shot, this gun will never be able to re-place my H&R's on my field stands, because they have more than proved themselves to be tack drivers!

Good luck to all in the up-coming season! Thanks for reading and responding ahead of time!

You tell me..............................??!

I'm looking at one myself or a Ithaca deer slayer.

I'm also will be purchasing the 220F, placing a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 on it. I hear that they have problems ejecting the shells, Savage says not to baby the bolt, also I hear the Remington Accu-Tip slugs seems to work best

Best of luck, and keep us all informed

Bought mine in July put a Nikon 6-18-40 on it. I put 15 rounds through it last weekend. It is an inch high at 150 yards. Going to shoot it at 200 when the hay gets cut. I cut Accu-tip 3 inch slugs. If you baby the bolt the shells will hang up. YOu have to pull it back like you mean it. It has very little recoil and is light weight.

I would be curious to know what everyone is paying to. I ordered a black one for 429.00 they could not find one so the guy sold me the camo one in the shop for the same price.

whitetailcrazy 08-31-2010 12:04 PM

I payed 425 for mine and it's a black/ blued barrel. If you got the camo 1 for 429 you got a deal..! I will be mounting a 3x9x40 Burris Fullfield II on top of mine... can't wait.

Holy cow, a 6-18 on a slug gun? Why?

I bought the gun to be able to hunt and shoot the length of two fields I hunt over. It is 201 yards to the end. Most shots are right at dark I wanted some power. I have a 3x9x40 on my ML and they look like ants when they come out that far away.

They have a good write up on it in last or this months "American Hunter" issue. Ejection problems no longer an issue with this new model. The older 210F in 12 gauge had issues. I bought one brand new in the box and it wouldn't allow the bolt to work the action. Took it right back. Maybe this new 20 gauge just might be the Cat's PJ's!!

I worked the bolt on this shotgun last week at Cabelas smoother then I thought it would be

You buy a gun, then ask about it...?

It's a savage, they are great guns. :party0005:

Shots right at dark huh. What's the EP on your 6-18 X 40 scope especially when using the higher powers? Obviously, you can do what you want but I'd NEVER scope that gun like that. Good luck anyway.

Ok.. I was going to start a thread on this gun but it seems enough people are asking about it already..

I bought one.. The ejection problem was modified and anything after Nov.09 is a new, corrected version.

I lapped the bolt in on mine cuz it was sticky but it's a newer version and I don't have any issues with it, gotta be mean with it though..

Anyway.. Some don't believe me but here it is..
My gun is topped with a Zeiss Conquest, 3-9x40. I am shooting the Remington Premier Accutip 3" slugs.

I am getting 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards!!! Off bags of course..
Now it will group at 200 but the drop on this slug is about 13 inches at 200 yards.. Anyway, good luck with your gun.. I have had a large number of slug guns and this one is the best shooting one yet..

What? Shots at dusk when light is fadding. You can use what you want and I can use what I want. Who cares.

Parrot Head 09-13-2010 04:50 AM

Guy on another site built his own 30 inch bull barrell to put on the Savage. Have not seen the results yet.

What he's saying is that those high powers, have Zero to do with your shots at dusk problem. and yep, you're totally right. You can do whatever you want haha.

Got to get some 200 yard shots through it Sat. It is about an inch or so high at 150 and it was dead on at 200.

Did you get it yet and how's it shoot?

BOWHUNTERCOP 10-01-2010 03:15 AM

Uncle Matt, no I didn't get it, I'm in no rush as I have a few slug guns, and I love my H&R. I will have it by the end of the year, I have the scope for it already, Leupold VX-II 3-9x40

In low light conditions, such as dusk or dawn, high magnifications greatly reduce picture brightness and field of view.
